Hi I'm due to fly to Egypt on the 14th and all though the resort we are going to is 5 star and in theory you should not have to leave the resort I was wondering if anyone knows of any good places to visit when in sharm?

Is it safe to go outside of the resort?

Thomas Cook only tell you what you want to hear so I thought I'd ask here.

Also can you tell me what the prices are for a meal with drinks per person and what prices are for general things such as water, crisps , pop , alcohol , cigarettes and perfume etc

My cousin went there earlier this year, so did a friend (not together). Check out the foreign office’s website. I’m sure a company like Thomas Cook takes the safety of its customers very seriously, if it's not safe then they won't fly you there.

Sharm el Sheikh is not really a place you go for sight seeing. You are generally advised not go out wandering unescorted but a taxi to the shopping malls is fine. Some hotels do run a mini-bus service as well. Otherwise stick to organised trips out but there was not a terrific lot of interest when I was last there (dolphin show was one I recall). The hotels usually have a choice of restaurants and all the facilties you could want. So there is no pressing need to leave your complex.

I stayed in a resort a few years back which had a private square full of shops and restaurants and they were not allowed to bother or hassle you. That is the main thing I get from bad feedback about Sharm, the hassle, particularly for females travelling without men. I did find the place a bit edgy. We had a private escort to airport who was allowed through security. When he went through an alarm went off, he opened his jacket and he had a gun in a holster!

My cousin enjoyed it. You are in a luxury enclave protected from the outside, you are not really visiting Egypt as such, but a hotel complex. Armed guards get you to and from the airport.

As long as your not flying over `Ukraine` & wearing a hijab when venturing out of your hotel you will be fine

I've been to Sharm loads of times, good for cheap winter sun. You'll find most of the hotels are 4 or 5*, I would always recommend having a good look at the review websites before you book any of them. You'll get a good feel for what's going to be OK and what's not. We generally go all inclusive and go out for a couple of nights. Naama bay is where there's nightlife and it's also worth exploring some of the little markets just outside. I guess because I am so familiar with the place I am very comfortable exploring. For a really nice meal (if you want to splash out a bit) take a taxi to Soho Square, it's like a mini Dubai. Arrange a time for the taxi to come and pick you back up otherwise you are at the mercy of the Bedouin(?) taxi drivers who come over a bit sinister and drive like nutters. Be very firm when negotiating with taxi drivers and you'll get a very good deal.

I headed here with a friend about 7 years ago and as two women together I never felt safe at all. At every turn there's somebody there trying to get money out of you. We only went out twice into the town the rest of the time we spent in the hotel and even in there we had all the waiters pestering us, remember us Brits look like millionaires to them! In the airport on the way home the toilets had run out of toilet paper and rather refill them we had a member of staff stood there handing it out asking for money in return!

I personally didn't like the place at all but that's just my opinion and sorry I can't be more helpful

From the news reports, you'll be to busy trying not to shit yer trunks to be thinking of going anywhere. ......

Went there for a week in March 2013, 5* all inclusive; of the group, which consisted of 5 adults, 4 of us developed severe shites whilst there.........it’s not uncommon.

Of the four who got it, I was the last and it afflicted me on the penultimate day; it took about 2 weeks before I firmed-up (as Jim Royle would put it!). I normally have a cast-iron constitution.

Strangely enough, it didn’t make me ill as such; just a really bad case of the ‘Lesters’.

My wife, who doesn’t normally have the strongest constitution, was the only one of our group who was unaffected.

We all had virtually the same drinks/diet for the entire week but, after much thought, the only significant difference we could identify was that my wife didn’t have any eggs whatsoever for the entire week. The rest of us did, every morning at breakfast.

Not proof positive but there you have it.

OP; enjoy your hols and keep off the ‘eggs’; and (hopefully) the bog! :o

Yes, because all hotels have a problem with sickness bugs, not just the one they mentioned eh?

You are better off going somewhere that is not so "false" if you get what I mean and has some culture. I know people that have gone there but it is not for me. Loads more nicer places in the world to visit really. But anyway have fun! :)

It's the difference between a holiday and travelling.
Anyone holidaying in a compound can hardly claim they went to Egypt. Dubai is another I have no interest in or Vegas. Good thing we're all different or all interesting places would be over crowded.

Indeed. I went to a 5* AI in Mexico because I wanted 2 weeks of total relaxation with great food and drink and facilities. We left the hotel twice.

If this is all some people want from a holiday then they might as well go to a safer hot country.

We are off to Cape Verde next month, because thats all we want, and theres not alot to do there, so it will be total relaxation, I doubt we will leave the Hotel at all.

    That's my idea of hell!!

When I visit a country I like to sample its cuisine and visit it's sights. Suppose we a like different things!

All the beautiful places to visit in the world why would anyone choose to go to an unsafe place with nothing of interest and be a virtual prisoner the whole time for safety!

A few years ago a travel agent desperately tried to sell me a 2 week "bargain" holiday there. They had most definitely over purchased rooms.

When I said no thanks, it's uninteresting and unsafe, she replied, "Don't worry there is an armed guard on the coach from the airport to the hotel" and "The hotel is quite secure" Yes, so are prisons.:o

Depends what you want out of a holiday; many people want a bit of sun, relaxation and a break from the stresses and strains of work etc.

To many people (me included) the idea of a ‘cultural vacation’ is not particularly appealing; I’ve travelled extensively and done all that stuff in the past, and as great as it was (mainly!) I prefer my hols to be of a simpler nature nowadays...............minus the shites, obviously. (post #15)
