Popular things you dislike and unpopular things you do like

Thought this could be an interesting thread! I'm very curious to see what popular things everyone dislikes as I feel increasingly alienated by not "getting" why something is such a hit with the mainstream public.

On the other side of the coin, I want to see if things deemed unpopular or "uncool" by the mainstream might have more enthusiasts than imagined. So, to start the ball rolling:

Popular things I don't get

- Mrs Browns' Boys
- Sob stories/misery lit
- "Mommy porn" like 50 Shades of Grey
- The Only Way Is Essex, Made in Chelsea, etc
- The Kardashians and especially "Kimye"
- The media's obsession over pregnant celebrites and mothers in general
- Americanisms

Unpopular things I like

- 80s music
- Radio 4
- BBC4
- Classic literature
- Autumn/Winter
- Typical "geeky" stuff like computers, science fiction, old films

I feel very out of step with a lot of people sometimes. Can anyone relate?

    Gotta agree with this!

I don't necessarily agree with the stuff she says. But by God she is the master of winding people up, on this forum and elsewhere! It's truly wonderful to behold. And the great thing is, the people getting wound up are doing EXACTLY what she wants them to do and they're either too stupid or too enraged (or both) to realise it! :D

I think Ugg boots are among the most hideous piece of fashion ever created, and I've never had any desire to do drugs ever.

I love bad horror movies! The more unintentionllay hilarious, the better. Nothing can beat Troll 2 for that!

I generally agree but her latest thing with the weight has cross a line for me. I don't want to get into that again though as I got very heated in the showbiz forum about it.

In terms of professional trolls, I thought Samantha Brick was hilarious! Where is she these days?

I'm with you on all the things you don't 'get', aside from Americanisms, on which I am ambivalent, probably because as I spend so much time there, I am guilty of frequently using.
My wife said that her brother's land line kept going to answer phone recently.
When I said, "Have you tried his cell?", she went bananas, oops there I go again.

Those are not unpopular, though. Roughly 60% of TV drama belongs to the SF genre. Among the most popular web sites are technology and SF blogs/sites. Mashable, io9 and Den of Geek, anyone?

As for old films? Still going strong.

    Popular things I don't like

iCloud/OneDrive/Dropbox - why do people store personal files with dodgy companies known for passing on and selling your information?

Retro glasses - they're thick, black and ugly and everyone seems to be wearing them, from Michael Gove to Lindsay Lohan. I see beautiful women wearing these huge oversized black retro things which I think look ridiculous. In years to come, I'm certain people will look back and say "what were you thinking?" Rimless is still the best in my books.

    Unpopular things I like

Star Trek - I'm talking about the real Star Trek and none of that reboot rubbish. I dream of a future like the one in Star Trek and to my knowledge, no series has ever been so scientific, futuristic, realistic and wondrous. A bunch of scientists combined soldiers exploring the galaxy - it really is the final frontier and with the unknown/unexplored comes a world of potential storylines that Star Trek barely tapped. It's the best darn concept ever produced and the fact that they stopped making real Star Trek is a crime to humanity. Paramount's 2005 network executive should face charges. J.J. Abrams Star Trek is fast-paced, uncreative, action-packed, fanboy rubbish.

Desktop computers. You can't beat coming home from a hard day at work, switching on the PC and laying back in your office chair with a keyboard, mouse and a drink in front of you. Forget tablets and smartphones - they're good viewing devices and so are laptops (with a many PC perks). Desktop computers are the real deal - the full computing experience with modular hardware, powerful internals and the ability to do everything (except take it around with you).

"Real" Star Trek is about tolerance and acceptance of different cultures and styles. If you, as a fan, can't live up to those standards, what hope does the rest of humanity have? The fact is that, eventually, a new TV series will be made on the back of the success of the movies, and given factors such as budget and ongoing narrative, it won't be as fast paced or action packed as the movies. It will more than likely be in line with traditional Trek, and for that we will have the new movies to thank. IDIC.

    Popular:

All the TV shows that people really get into i.e. Game of thrones, breaking bad etc. Not that there is anything wrong with them but I don't get caught up like that. Aside from Orange is the new black but that's because I watched both seasons on netflix.

Ricky gervais, Karl pilkington (sp) annoying and not funny, watched one episode of an idiot abroad and just thought he was rude and ignorant.

Mrs Brown Boys - my family love it, I don't see the appeal

Some woman's morals and promiscuity - I don't think it's empowering, I think it actually sets us back if we are not respecting ourselves and I personally don't like it or respect it.

Doctor Who: I tried it, I just don't quite get it

    Unpopular:

    I love reality shows Essex/made in Chelsea/ X factor/ BGT and soaps
Football (an unpopular option on DS)
    Tattoos
    Piercings
    Black and white movies
Ballet and theatre (not unpopular as such just at odds to the other things I like)
    Rap/ hip hop
    Anything by or about Sophocles
