Cities that would be better with one football team?

A random thought this. IMHO there are quite a few medium size cities with 2 football teams for no good reason. Wouldn't they be better merging?

I'm thinking of

Sheffield- Wednesday and United
Bristol- City and Rovers
Nottingham- Forest and County

And in Scotland
Edinburgh- Hearts and Hibs

What do you guys think?

Definitely Bristol. Can't see Rovers ever amounting to much. And I can't believe that City have never been in the Premier League. The fans would go spare, though.

If you are talking Scotland, what about the two Dundee clubs? There grounds are about two inches's away from each other!

    Good point.

To be fair, I don't know that much about Scottish football.

Edinburgh is a city of around half a million people though

What is the criteria for allowing two in one city then

    Not sure either?

A better logic would be maybe to say that by combining resources they would be better off financially, a stronger team with twice the supporters (if half don't get pissed off).

They seem pretty safe now, to me. Unlike City, I'm afraid. With the catchment area available to City, their non-performance in recent years has been a joke.

    Bristol urban population, 551000
    Sheffield urban population 650000
    Nottingham urban population 825000

Not really medium sized cities and no reason for them to need only 1 club.

Sheffield has a population of over half a million, so can hardly be described as medium sized and both it's clubs have played in the Premier League in recent times, and are capable of getting big attendances when they're doing well.

Apart from a few seasons in the old first division by Bristol City, many of them before the first world war, the Bristol clubs have underperformed, especially Rovers.

There are some small towns which have two non league sides, but I would disagree with the OP, I am against sides amalgamating, many of them have long histories and it would be hard to support a new team which is partly made up from your detested rivals.

    Similar situation in Liverpool.

You could throw a sweet wrapper out of Goodison Park & it could land in Anfield, so close are the grounds.

The Dundee grounds are ridiculously close though.

I believe Forest and County are the closest after the Dundee clubs.

Just no:eek:they got a draw today Dundee:(. I thought we would have beaten them as always

Years ago Dundee FC wanted to change their name to Dundee City as there was a constant reference to Dundee United as Dundee as well especially South of the Border

Not really medium sized cities and no reason for them to need only 1 club.

Firstly, your figure for Nottingham is WAY highside. The real figure is 666,000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_urban_areas_in_the_United_Kingdom

Secondly, it depends what you class as 'large'. For example

London Urban area has 8.2 million people.

    West Midlands 2.3 Million

    Greater Manchester 2.2 Million

    Glasgow 1.1 Million

Those are what I call large cities, and each has 2 or more top flight clubs

Interestingly Tyneside, 880,000 people, has only one club.

    Split them

    Newcastle United and Newcastle City

Mike Ashley will buy City too :D

Yours is from 2001, mine is from 2004 and a study into the actual urban zone.
Eurostat's concept of the Larger Urban Zone listed the area's population at 825,600 as of 2004.

Newcastle only has one professional club.

    Gateshead has their own.

Nottingham Forrest is not in Nottingham:)

A better example would be Stoke and Port Vale
