According to The Sun today ITV News at Ten anchors Mark Austin and Julie Etchingham are to be replaced by a new programme modelled on American lines
News at Ten with Tom Bradby. Austin is expected to move to the 6.30 news and
Etchingham to stand-in for Bradby who was strongly criticised for his handling of election night on ITV.On some nights NAT is beaten 5-1 in the ratings by the BBC News.
Sorry I can't provide a link as The Sun is behind a pay-wall.
Do we really need an ''American style'' news programme ?

News at Ten is a pale shadow of its former self and I would have thought it was the producers who needed changing. But very positive news for the BBC:D

Oh dear, sounds like another revamp disaster for ITV along the lines of breakfast TV. What exactly would an American style bulletin be like compared to now?

American style sounds good to me. American style is the opposite of bland and sterile. That gets my thumbs up.

I seem to recall ITV's Good Morning Britain is modelled along the lines of American-style morning shows and look what a roaring success that has been managing to lose 200,000 viewers from the much-derided Chiles/Bleakley era.News at Ten with Tom Bradby doesn't quite have the same ring about it as Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw or Peter Jennings.

A few hours later and the Daily Mail reports :)

American style means a single presenter. They could have just as easily said reverting bCk to when Sir Trev was the newscaster but that would lack the dramatic hyperbole demanded by the dramas divas of DS

The daily mail article contains a quote about if it ain't broke, then don't fix... Trouble is, it IS broke, because it tanks in the ratings.

Mark and Mary are the best! Get them back together on Evening News.

News at Ten can go to the dogs with Tom and Julie!

ITV now describes the 6.30 news as its ''Main News'' rather than the Ten. It's well known inside ITN that Mark Austin, an ex-BBC sports reporter, ''doesn't do politics''.

    More bitchyness.
Many reporters covered sport in their time. Kate Aide started on a local paper covering a flower show so by your reckoning she's an ex flower show reporter

I'm flattered you take such an interest in my posts, surely you have better things to do with your time ?

Is there a special relevance, however, to "doesn't do politics" or ex-sports reporter? How many journalists do ITV News have with extensive/wide reporting & presenting skills- including on-location- from war zones, different continents etc; and can even do sport authoritatively?

ITV News have some very good journalists, in my opinion, but I would suggest that Mark Austin & Alastair Stewart are the two that you could depend on to bring the widest experience/skills to the breadth of news that ITV should be covering.

No we don't. ITN needs to remember that we are British not American. I like Mark Austin. Perhaps he will defect to the Beeb.

Looks like Alastair Stewart doesn't have a regular slot. Shame. I think he's an excellent presenter.

I'd welcome that but I doubt it's on the cards. ITV are very much into a homogenised look for their news programming.

If Tom Bradby is presenting ''most nights of the year'' how can Julie Etchingham be ''frequently'' presenting the programme as it's now a one-person show ?
I wonder who choked that quote out of Mark Austin ?
There was a suggestion recently on another thread that Alastair Stewart might be retiring.
All good news for the BBC:D

This change just isn't needed, the current presenters have both won awards in the last 5 or so years and have managed to stabilize the program. Replacing an established program with a much criticized presenter and a style that has been unsuccessful in the breakfast slot can only show that it is destined to fail.

Massive mistake! Tom is dreadful and as for demoting Alastair, that's unforgivable

Thank god Mary wasn't demoted. I had a feeling she was going to be sidelined for the dreary Julie Etching.

Mark and Mary back together, yay! The M'n'M of TV News!

The only thing I'd change, is swap Bradby for Alistair and Julie (each taking turns presenting).

Usual drivel from ftv, saying the same things over and over again. Slagging off Mark Austin because he doesn't specialise in politics and gloating how much BBC News is ahead of everyone else.

I don't see Jeremy Bowen hosting a political debate or Huw Edwards live from Afganistan either, does this mean they are both poor quality broadcasters?

It actually shows the strength in ITV's line up that the main presenters all specialise in different areas.

American style is just tabloid talk for single headed. They or ftv obviously haven't noticed that that presumably means all the BBC bulletins are American style.

I also seem to recall a version of Daybreak presented by Kate Garraway and Dan Lobb, and a further version with Lorraine Kelly & Aled Jones, both of which saw ratings drop slightly below their previous versions. It's not as though GMB instantly followed the Chiles/Bleakley era and lost all of those viewers in one go as your post would suggest. Anyone would think you had some kind of agenda.

Well in away we did have the yanky equivalent in the 1990's with Sir Trevor McDonald and News at Ten and it worked very well, until the wallies at itv axed the show in 1999 shunting the news to 11 pm. This format would have also suited the brilliant Sir Alastair Burnett, who lets face it was itn and News at Ten.
