Funnily enough the rating was up on last year - just as well itv held up the white flag eh?
Did you predict that the uk televote would award 12 points to the cleavage show that was Poland. :D
Seriously - if that's how the uk vote, how can you criticise the way the rest of europe votes
The cleavage show that finished above us. Maybe we'd have more luck sending porn stars to represent us next year ?

It will go either way - this reminds me of 1996, where we hadn't won for years and years and Gina G was the big hope, had a brilliant song but then came 7th or so because the juries didn't like it. Then in 1997, obviously determined, they went a step further and found a complete package winner and we stole the show.

Our chances this year were a bit overstated compared to 96 but I do feel this could be the moment, like 97, where someone says "right we ARE going to do it this time" and finds a true winner. Germany did so 4 years back.

Or yes we'll revert to being lazy and clueless and send Christine Bleakely reading an autocue!
I think we sort of had to finish respectably with Molly for there to be that kind of ambition next year. And 17th is not that respectable, really. Especially when the likes of Poland finished above us.

Great ratings for Eurovision, although it was bound to be over 8million with the lack of any competition. In fact I think ITV shut down after 8pm. ITV couldn't really have made it any easier for the BBC, and some moan when the BBC roll over for ITV's big shows. Well ITV have just smashed that record for easiest programmes to go up against.

Yes it was very strange the schedule on ITV. I mean do they really not have any programs recorded to fill up their schedules or dont they care any more?

It doesn't help, no. But one of the rare times we bother turning up and everyone expects us to be rewarded greatly and she wasn't as good as many on the night. It needs more.

I don't understand why we find it so hard. The UK needs to stop over thinking it or trying to be credible and just give us a decent pop song or ballad or a number of them to choose from. It's not rocket science - Sweden have it down to a fine art!

Two hours under a million in peak on a Saturday evening should not be considered acceptable. If money's that tight, it probably does make sense to move BGMT across to the main channel as I'm sure it would add a lot of viewers and at least perform respectably, something their current offerings are unable to do.

So happy for Conchita. It's a massive f**k off to Russia.

Re Molly and Samuel's gloating that we did badly (please stop its nauseating) I'm genuinely shocked at the result. I think its because I've listened to the song endlessly for months and months that I was convinced we'd do well. Yes its political now due to Russia getting all those points (evil Putin I really hate you) BUT it can't all be political due to Conchita winning. Fair dos there was the gimmick there but Austria's song stood out and Molly's got lost amongst all the other songs.

Still it's been a great night and I'm gonna predict a 9.5-10m peak.
Another year and the same old arguments. It was our best song for years but as SamuelW himself said the performance on the night just wasn't good enough - though it still should have done better than it did.

Exactly. Yes it was political voting but political voting of a very positive kind with viewers from across the continent making a very bold statement. And Austria didn't just have the gimmick of a bearded lady - they had a decent song too and she absolutely nailed the performance on the night. It was far better than the semi final and all three things came together for them - if it had been a bearded lady with a crap song and below par performance it wouldn't have won.

ITV Ratings: @GotTalent topped the ratings with 9.4m/44% share, peaking with 11.4m/49% share

Wow at the peak for BGT!
Fantastic rating. I doubt the ratings after 8pm make nice reading for ITV though - suspect they're more around the 1.4m mark than 11.4m.

The #Eurovision peak audience came at 11pm, when 10.60m (55.8% of the TV audience) were watching.
Brilliant rating - people just love the voting don't they. It's an absolute bargain for the BBC too - less than an episode of The Voice for the entire week with something like 60 performances, far more than you get across all the live shows of the Voice. And with no Match of the Day it's probably one of BBC1's cheapest Saturday nights of the year.

No one is suggesting political voting doesn't exist, but it never ever affects the overall result.

How do you explain that Austria and Netherlands - who have an even worse track record than us in the last decade - came Top 2? Seriously, how do you Samuel?

The simple fact is a song that connects in terms of performance and music, as well as a nice position, will do well. Some slip by the wayside, as in any competition ever, but by and large popular ones take home the points whether you like them or not.

Molly deserved better but failed due to:

-Being on last which is not ideal
-Many, many better performances than hers. Hers was restrained and possibly nervous.
-The song did not translate as well in the arena as others
-By the end people had already made up their minds who they wanted to win, I certainly had.

We had a great performance in 2009 - and came 5th for our efforts. Every other year we've been utterly dreadful or dull and forgettable. The UK needs to stop acting so entitled, if we make the effort we'll do well, end of story. And no, Samuel, it is not "deflating" for hardcore Eurovision fans to see the UK do so badly - it is deflating that we send utter crap and so most of us EXPECT to do badly as a result and don't jump on the totally ill informed biased voting bandwagon. Last night Molly deserved more because the UK actually bothered to turn up this year, but not on any grand scale, so people need to stop acting so entitled and realize we need to make more effort next time.

Edit: Regards to ratings, brilliant! :D People love the show regardless of the result
    Well said.

1.4m was a bit optimistic then.

Excellent for Eurovision Song Contest, looks like Itv waving the white flag really did help. Perfect for the BBC, it costs only £300,000 for 3.5hours so is cheap as chips and gets huge ratings. Viewer per pound spent it must be one of the cheapest primetime shows of the year. I expect the same thing next year, lots of people saying the UK will do well, then we'll disappoint. But as long as the ratings stay this strong, it's job done for the Beeb.

The last Maigret series ITV did starred Michael Gambon in the nineties. It didn't rate well as it faced One Foot In The Grave. Rowan Atkinson is no Michael Gambon.

    And now we wait.

It could be a re-work of ITV's version that had Michael Gambon in the lead role.

All ITV had to do is put Harry Potter in the slot - it would have complemented it well enough and done as well as it does on weeknights. Alternatively a Bond film would have done the trick - they're also airing them at the moment too in off-peak slots.

With ratings of 8million and topping the Saturday night ratings [excluding +1], Im pretty happy with the BBC to continue showing this farce. If it had been getting ratings of 4-5m, it would be time to get rid of it. But its ratings value overpowers the negative reputational effect Eurovision has on the channel, it's worth keeping for now.

So, it's the last day of the Premier League and both Sky and the BBC will be hoping for a dramatic climax. Purely from a viewing figures point-of-view and for no other reason at all (yeah, right!) it'd be nice to see West Ham get an early goal today.

Excellent for Eurovision and Britain's Got Talent. Diabolical for ITV post BGT - I imagine its cheaper to repeat a drama shown on the same week, but surely they could move over Britain's Got More Talent to ITV as others suggested or they could repeat a comedy like Benidorm, as comedy repeats tend to repeat better than drama showings.

Not really. I wasnt going to mention it but since you asked: It was actually one of BGT's worst ever rating performances on a Eurovision night [excluding +1]. It was down 0.5million from last year's Eurovision night episode and down over a million from the 2012 Eurovision nigth episode!

It was 0.2m up on last year's Eurovision episode actually (9.4m versus 9.2m). How do you even know what it got without +1? For it to have been down 0.5m then it must have got 8.3m, which seems very unlikely given the peak without +1 was only 0.9m above the peak with it.

There wasn't a Eurovision night episode in 2012 at all so I've no idea where you've got that from. There was in 2011 and it was 1m up on that!

Liverpool will be hoping for a dramatic climax more than anybody! :D

Pity that it's just the title being decided. Would have been very exciting had the last Champions League and relegation places were also decided today.

Read just now that the Jonathan Ross Show is having a major revamp for its next series following poor ratings. The next series will begin in October and will be shorter than previous runs.

Also Celebrity Squares will be Itv's big new Saturday night summer hope, airing in the Saturday 7pm slot in July and August. They are expecting big things from this. Personally I think BBC1 just needs to air repeats of Pointless Celebrities all summer in the 7pm slot which will win the ratings and brush off Celebrity Squares very easily.

So a 41.9% share is now better than a 44% share?

What negative reputation effect would that be then? Where is it manifested?
