I am aware that I am probably straying off-topic here but, in another life I am an editor of a rugby supporters site. Northampton Saints lost one of their finest ever players in 1917 and each year the website marks this time of year by directing people to this article...
Confession: When I read this I forgot about the actual epilogue and was thinking instead of Son of Mine's voiceover of the family's fates being meted out by the Doctor and couldn't fathom how that could be described as moving and appropriate for this time of year.
The description from the poster on the you tuber linked summed it up. Human Nature/Family of Blood, Blink and even the Master trilogy was the best period of New Who so far although there's still the last 3 specials to look forward to.
As for the clip, this was just special, a highly appropriate episode for this period but gets you any time of the year.
I like longevity of it, you get to know Tim's character and then watch him grow old, you get the sense of just what the Fob watch meant to him and the lack of dialogue from him just completed it.
The Epilogue is stunning, it moves me to tears every time. A year ago our last three survivors of the Great War were at the cenotaph. Now they are no more. 3 left in the world now.
Human Nature and Family of Blood is as good as it gets for Doctor Who in its long and distinguished history.
I do not care for New Who in general but these two episodes were magnificent.
This is the scene that makes me cry the most, out of all 4 series. I sob my socks off every single time. It's such a beautiful, respectful, gentle and understated moment, conveying everything perfectly without the need for a single word of dialogue. Absolutely exquisite.
