From looking at the Horizon website I would imagine there are bigger priorities right now...

    Interesting.

The Horizon FM page mentioned 106.7FM for Costa Blanca yesterday but no mention of which part of the Costa. I believe a Radio Nova is on this frequency in the Torrevieja area.

Horizon is on 106.7 from Alicante to Torrevieja, 90.0 from Javea to Calpe and 97.6 in Benidorm

So Horizon is now the de facto "better music mix" station in Tenerife, going up against Atlantis and whatever Coast has/will become.

It begs the question, why did Energy FM have to close? Am I right in saying there is now no dance music station servicing the island?

Horizon is not in competition with Atlantis and the two stations work together. the Atlantis format is older than Horizon. Energy was sold along with Coast so it's demise is down to the new operators.

Currently no English dance station on the island although some good Spanish dance stations are on air.

Energy may well be returning soon :-)

One of the stations in Lanzarote is now saying that none of the stations in the Canary Islands have licences. Buzz FM wen't off air last week by the looks of it. They say...

"...a commercial proposition. No English stations were awarded licences in The Canary Islands and no licences were granted in Lanzarote for frequencies..."

    Source: http://www.buzzfm.fm/

Is this correct, as surely that would have an impact on any of the stations in Tenerife?

It has been discussed on DS many times; no foreign language station on Mainland Spain or in the Spanish Islands have licences to broadcast. Even many of the licenced Spanish stations operate with more transmitters or power than they are licenced for. Generally no action is taken by the authorities against the un-licenced stations unless they are causing problems - they do pay the Spanish equivalent of PPL/PRS, taxes etc, they just have no broadcast licence. I believe there have been issues with the frequencies that Buzz FM on Lanzarote were using and that the station has ignored previous warnings over their use.

Interestingly the station formerly known as Coast FM appear to have a live Breakfast Show again from today with Gordon and Jadene. Still no on air name though..

Ahhhhh, so maybe their reasons for going off air are not quite as they are saying then? They state that they are going off air to stop them getting sued because of the new licencing laws, not because of ignoring frequency infringement.

If the Spanish authorities are going to sue all non licenced stations they are going to be very busy! Even on Lanzarote there are many let alone the other Canary Islands!!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking when I visited there recently. There are so many stations that for them all to be prosecuted would be mad.

Unless they are working through the list alphabetically! If so, buzz should rename themselves ZzzzzzFM! :p

I see Horizon are going for Spain in general as well as the Canary Islands. Good for them!

I see the station formerly known as Coast FM have today re-launched as Smooth FM, how original....why are they are bothering? Nothing original, similar to the existing stations, same music.

Smooth FM isn't sounding too bad now actually. The imaging is more Apollo Center than Safari Center but it's an improvement on what they were offering earlier in the year.

I was disappointed to note some pre-recorded stuff yesterday afternoon on Horizon FM, telling us it was Monday morning and making no references to the songs played. I do feel that Horizon is missing a certain something at the moment, in yesterday's case, a live or correctly voicetracked afternoon show. It appears to be less personable than it was whereas Smooth seems to be capitalising on this at the moment. Hopefully a short term issue as the lads at Horizon do work hard to provide a quality product most of the time.

Great to hear Energy back on the island as well.

It looks like two old VT links ran on Friday while we were running on a backup playout while we added some new studio equipment.

    All fixed now :)

Didn't last long, all Smooth transmitters off due to 'non payment of bills'

And still they remain off. I take it that's the end of the Coast FM debacle?

When I was looking on Rightmove I came across a radio station for sale in Alicante for 79000 euros if anyone fancies it.

Thanks Charlie. Interesting - don't think I have ever seen a radio station advertised by an Estate Agent!. Wonder which one it is? Think both Heat FM & Bay Radio operate in Moraira. Any others?

According to other sources bailiffs moved in at the end of July after many 1000s of euros were owed to various parties. Sad but inevitable end to the station; once again it is another case of people thinking they can run radio stations better than others without any experience.
