I have a windows 7 laptop which I've had for a year without issue, but lately it's been acting up. The following have been happening
1) That revolving circle or buffering thing takes much longer
2) Brwoser keeps crashing saying 'not responding'
3)Clicking on a page with lots of youtube links tends to take forever and lead to the page crashing, this never used to happen.
4)can't use Twitter without it crashing and saying something about Silverlight or something
How can I fix it?

If you go into tools/options you can reset the browser, in case a plugin or toolbar is causing the problem.
It's also a good idea to do a periodic scan with Malwarebytes (free).
I use firefox though I had the same issues with Google chrome.
Load CCleaner and look at Start Up.
I'd still reset all your browsers and do a malware scan before anything else.
How do you do that?
Help > Troubleshooting Information > Reset Firefox to its default state = sorted
How much unused Hard Drive space is left?
Don't know how to back up files.
190 GB out of 270.
Also having trouble with shockwave crashing all the time.
What's that got to do with a simple reboot?
Or are you confusing the term reboot with factory restore?
A simple reboot means shutting Windows down powering off the computer and restarting it. No file back up or anything required.
A Factory Restore however does involve wiping the content of the hard drive and returning it to out of the box condition. Which would require a back-up of your data.
Might I suggest you invest some time in learning how to do back-ups (not difficult) as disaster can strike any time. No point learning how to do back-ups when your computer has crashed big time and you can no longer access any data on it. And it is not a question of IF your computer dies but WHEN.
Many easy ways to backup.
For example see here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/back-up-files#1TC=windows-7
