Operation EDL

I wondered if anyone has read about hacker group Anonymous's 'Operation EDL'?
They started tonight by tweeting names, addresses and phone numbers of EDL leaders and members, as well as emails and passwords to EDL related websites. Also they gave a link, divulging hundreds of criminal charges of leaders and members, many relating to racist and violent crime.
What do you think about this? Their plan is to dismantle the EDL, something I would definitely like to see happen if possible. Saying that though, the EDL mass reported the initial @opEDL twitter and had it suspended, after posting the first round of info exposing the EDL.
Do Anonymous have what it takes to rid us of the vermin?

The operation?
Aah yes. Taking a look now;)
Summat tells me that ain't them. So to speak.
That's not right, and what about any partners and kids who are not involved...
^
This.
I heavily disagree with the EDL, but I also disagree with Anonymous in this case - as I have done previously when they leaked similar data or have encouraged vigilante action.
Anonymous are, on the whole, a force for good - but I think they do get a bit caught up in it and misguided on some issues.
Is it definitely done by Anonymous? I have also liked some of their previous efforts. Their hearts appear to be in the right place. But yeah, in cases like this, I think they should limit how much information they reveal.
Oh the ironing!?
If they screw up and post incorrect or damaging information I assume they'll be happy to come forward and face the consequences of their actions, right?
Yeah, thought not.
*EDIT*
Just listened to that youtube video...
WTF?
Did Mr Anonymous REALLY say "Muslims are not the real problem. The real problem are the zionist Jews and we all need to stick together to defeat them before it's too late"?
Anonymous' credibility just fell RIGHT off the scale.
Bunch of f**king hypocrites!
I agree about limiting what they reveal. Names, contact info and addresses should probably not be released. All the charge info I have seen was already in the public eye on news sites, but probably not seen by many.
If people get the general idea of the criminality and racism that runs through the group, from seeing in black and white all the charges, they may distance themselves.
A lot of people still don't believe that they are racist and believe they are trying to do something good for England. They have gained a lot more backing in the last week and I find that worrying.
I think it was Anonymous who leaked the BNP membership list a few years ago and have also 'encouraged' vigilante action on sex-offenders/peadophiles by distributing information on them if memory serves me correctly.
They managed to get some child porn website shut down or something as well but got a lot of criticism because again, IIRC, there was ongoing investigations into it and it may have actually disrupted police monitoring of suspected peadophiles.
Well intentioned but not something I approve of. These things should be left to the proper authorities.
The thing with Anonymous is that the name can be used by anyone 4chan, reddit, CIA, Mossad, MI5, JIDF, Stormfront, MDL... ANYONE can claim to be Anonymous.
I feel like a complete idiot right now. I linked the wrong bloody video:o
Here is the correct link. Damn:mad:

They're not very clever then are they?
This is a very valid point.
I have heard of things which have been attributed to Anonymous but subsequently denied.
They sound like real 'loosers':D
A different video with a different message doesn't negate the fact that it seems some people affiliated with Anonymous are just as f**king racist as the EDL, themselves.
Utterly pathetic.
Hypnodisc I agree with you as well. The general viewpoints I support. From what little I know about them, they're against animal cruelty, against Atos, against workfare, and so on. But then, they're against loss of privacy, which I agree with, yet they do things like this which amounts to a loss of privacy for the people they target...
THEONEFROMHERE - Yep, that is what I am worried about.
The original vid I posted was not the proper Anonymous one. From everything I have read of them, I have never come across anything racist or anti Semitic.
That isn't to say you are wrong, just that I haven't come across anything like that.
Also, I just want to say I have great respect for you on this forum Si. I may be a somewhat impulsive poster at times but I mean well:)
Who was it?
Well it certainly isn't the video being shared by the official anonymous twitter. I made the mistake of searching the video on YouTube and mistakenly posted the wrong one.
Alas, the big problem with any group which is unwilling to hold themselves up to public scrutiny is that any arsehole can claim to represent them and, that being the case, it's impossible to have any level of confidence in or respect for anything they do or say.
Oh, nothing to do with you.
Just that I really have nothing but contempt for people who aren't prepared to actually stand up and be accountable for their actions and, as this example shows, it's very easy to end up supporting something quite unpleasant in cases like this.
