Excellent night for ITV2. Third place from 9pm.

Despicable Me might have done 1m+ too if it wasn't on every month or so. And it's on again next Sunday !

Looks like moving Countryfile and Antiques Roadshow earlier to accommodate Michael McIntyre wasn't really worth it.

I thought Skyfall would do well for them and it did. That's without +1 as well, so was probably about 1.3m with it.

Considering how often Despicable Me is on that is still very good - will have been near 800k with +1. Wonder if ITV will premiere the sequel this year?

Do you have the ITV list Dancc? :)

You'd have thought the Grand National would be the number one event in Clare Balding's calendar, given her association with the sport. But with this decision and the arrival of her BT Sport show on BBC Two - she seems very keen indeed not to burn any bridges with the BBC.

Also, let's not underestimate the Boat Race as a sporting event in its own right. Viewership wise, it's not a very long way behind the National. As strange and perhaps outdated as it may seem, it still resolutely pulls audiences that put many 'bigger' sporting events to shame. And with the addition of the Women's race for the first time this year, they've probably got a better chance of holding onto a larger audience for longer.

Apparently she has a personal connection to the new Boat Race sponsors, which might have influenced her decision:
Horseracing specialist Clare Balding’s surprising decision to present BBC’s men’s and women’s Boat Race coverage on April 11 rather than the flagship Grand National on Channel 4, might have something to do with the rowing event being sponsored by American investment giants the Mellon Corporation.

The late Paul Mellon owned legendary racehorse Mill Reef, which was trained by Clare’s father, Ian.

Mellon rewarded Balding for his Mill Reef triumphs with a trust fund that paid for the entire education of his children Clare and Andrew at top private schools. ‘Mr Mellon, as we called him, paid for it, the whole lot,’ said Clare in an interview.

I think Despicable Me would've done better if it started earlier. I imagine not long after it started the target audience went to bed.

Great Canal Journey's has been a glorious series, so I hope they return next year.

Sure. Bear in mind people that these exclude +1 and more significantly HD:

    Off Their Rockers: 2.20m (11.8%)
    Vera: 3.84m (17.3%)
Bear Grylls: Mission Survive: 0.62m (4.1%)

Did ITV NaT really do worse than Grylls or is the app lying to me? Seems rather implausible unless there was some sort of technical error.

Looks like ITV2 was well in front of the main channel after 10:15 so Skyfall 3rd or even 2nd in its slot by that point.

    Thanks. :)

Wonder if Vera will have hit 5m with HD and +1? Based on that number I'm not too convinced. Although the holidays do seem to have had a negative effect all round so it might go up next week. Even once everything is included Off Their Rockers will probably be pretty poor.

I'd assume that would be a glitch as that would seem very implausible to me. Does the app perhaps only report programmes over a certain length (perhaps 15 mins)?

Vera will possibly fall a little short of 5m but it got a lot closer to Poldark than I expected and has done very well.

Must be something like that regarding ITV News.

Your argument just doesn't stand up. In living memory the BBC has shown Eurovision-related programmes that got three times the audience of the Good Friday special, including the BBC's own 50th anniversary show fronted by Wogan, national finals (when we still had them) and spin-off shows following our entry's build up to the contest. So clearly something has gone badly wrong in the years since.

That special rated well in Ireland and across Scandinavia this weekend, suggesting the BBC's disastrous approach over the last ten years is the reason for that terrible rating here.

I'm amazed you think the current BBC approach is a success. You must be one of the few who do. In case you hadn't noticed we're 'enjoying' an unprecedented disastrous run now 15 years long ... and this in a show we dominated as late as the end of the 90s. As for 'enjoying it any way we want to'... the UK audience isn't enjoying seeing us finish badly year after year. Their patience has run out. And the dismal rating on Good Friday is the proof. They obviously don't watch each year to see the BBC's contributions (which rarely now trouble the singles chart, when other countries entries are still hits here). The BBC has run Eurovision into the ground in the UK. It's a testament to the appeal of the contest that it still draws such a huge British audience each May - despite, not because of, the BBC's pitiful contributions.

PS. The BBC doesn't know how to 'do Eurovision properly'. Getting 60 year old pop stars to play their 40 year old hits certainly wasn't the German broadcaster ARD's idea of doing it properly. They wanted to stage the show very differently and were not pleased that the EBU gave the broadcast to the BBC. ARD knew only too well what dated campery the BBC would serve up... and they were proved right (and won't be broadcasting the BBC show..probably wisely ).

The BBC show on Good Friday was very enjoyable. Whether the Germans were disgruntled or not is their look out. It was given to the BBC because it was the BBC, 60 years ago, who suggested the contest in the first place. It is baffling why it wasn't watched by the British, but it was enjoyed across Europe and is a good way of showing Europe that the BBC does still care.

Your anger towards the songs chosen to represent us is unwarranted. It is only since 2011 that the public have had no say. Up until 2009 we voted for the songs. If they were crap it's because we chose them. The BBC are sending a credible song this year, it is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in years, yet the British Eurovision fan hates it. Basically, if the song isn't a song created from the dissections of ideas and suggestions put forward by "fans", it is always going to be crap.

It was definitely closer than I expected so I'll credit Vera with that. It seems to be one of those shows that delivers a solid audience even in somewhat undesirable circumstances. I believe another series has already been commissioned.

I think both dramas might go up a little bit next week as the holidays may have depressed both slightly.

Though they never said ITV was the natural home for the FA Cup and it was always going to return there. I'd say the words this time were far more complimentary and leaving less room for manouver than previously.

The Cup will be at the BBC as long as Greg Dyke is at the FA.

There was an article in the Sunday Times magazine about the women's race, I thought it was more to do with the fact that Clare Balding had been partly responsible for the women being allowed to row the Thames course this year. Instead of being shunted off to Henley & ignored.

Whatever, it should be good viewing, as there will be 3 races. Goldie & Isis making up the third one. ( No that's not the lot in Syria ) :D

But why the need for two separate races? In this age of equality, why can't they just pick a rowing team made up of the best people regardless as to what sex they are? Isn't the fact that their are two races still undermining the women to a degree because the emphasis is still going to be given to the main race which is consisted of male rowers?

Well I cant say Iv ever rowed but surely no woman could match a man strength wise(not at that level at least) and therefore a woman would never be chosen in the main race, unless it was made compulsory to include women.

Haven't they had female coxes before in the men's race ?

I don't think so, the women said in this article that they knew the men had more muscle strength & were quicker.

Therefore if they picked the 8 fastest rowers, they'd end up with all male crews anyway.

McIntyre did pretty badly then? I must say a part of me is glad, the Christmas 'house party' show was much more entertaining, especially if they're looking at it in terms of formats that could work long-term. Tho that may be down to the guests last night being nothing special whereas his guests at Christmas were perfect.

Yes, and they do get dunked in the Thames in the same way as the men if they win ;-)

Unless it has really flopped it could still be around 4.4 million which is still reasonable
