Just an update : I've just bought an Asus T100AT convertible - a hybrid laptop/tablet.
The font's a little small, but with most applications I can zoom in. I grasped what Windows 8.1 was about, so far as the start screen and app screen were concerned, so I've shifted some tiles off the start screen, and moved others on.
I'm currently waiting for some items from Amazon - a book on W8, a 64GB microSD, and an SDcard to micro USB adapter. Then I can start moving photos, music etc. from the laptop.
The machine comes with a full version of Office for Scholars (or similar) and next time my 8 year old granddaughter visits, she's going to show me how to use it.
