it's full of shit i mean who wants to listen to lady gaga and justin bieber for ffs, there's too much of rubbish music, over the last 10 years there has been good music but lately its just full of nonsense, thanks to the x-factor as well the music industry is going down the gutter and you can all thank simon cowell for that..

I'm over 50 so any critisism I have of today's new music might be seen as related to my age.

But I loved the music of the late 90s more than that of the early 90s. Maybe in 5 more years musical tastes will align temselves more with mine again.

I'm sick and tired of you complainers music and good music is out there and readily available if you have an open mind and look for it the charts are no different to when PWL pumped them full of trash in the late 80's or Fuller in the 90's if you spent less time moaning about it and actually sought out dcent musicians of which there are many you'd do us all a favour.

You don't have to listen to the charts some enjoy it some don't most don't needlessly feel the need to comment on how its ruining music etc so forth ad nauseum.

Its really only this mainstream hybrid of (of what's trying to pass as) dance/hip hop/RnB that is vacuous and lacks heart imo. Its like listening to robots singing-although in a sense that's who is singing-company robots.

I disagree about labelling Lady Gaga in this category because she does her best to stamp her personality on her music and inject fun and some drama into her songs which cant be said for most of her chart rivals.

There is lots of music being made that is full of soul (soul as in a 'feeling') and emotion on every level-and stacks of dance, hip hop and RnB tracks as individual genres but because they don't conform to the robot world that is mainstream radio, you have to go looking for them. Same with rock, reggae, etc etc

Well I don't like most of chart music, but I like some of it. Lady Gaga is one of my favourite singers.

Judging by this forum, a lot of people listen to todays music.

Grunge can't comeback since we did not need it like the early 90's and mide 90's like when we did need it.Kids were more pissed and anger back then and it was the right time for it, Grunge music since people were starved for something like it just like Punk in the 70's and Goth in the 80's.It had that perfect agst and depressive angry lyrics and i miss it but it won't comeback just like trip hop funk metal and all the other alternative 90s music it was there for the time and that was it catching the moment.Going too a gig use to be people jumping around and stage driving and monster mosh pitting not now.Or comes down too the fact kids are just not out spoken or anger these days and MTV once played music videos non stop but that has change with X factor and the like's of Reality tv kids just get what they wan't now.

I don't think that music today is crap - there's still amazing music out there, like always. You just sometimes have to dig a bit deeper, i.e. go further down the charts, or even beyond the chart entirely.

I think there's some oversentimentalising going on here. Yes, there is a lot of terrible stuff out there in the charts, but that's the same as it's always been. There's great stuff out there as long as you search a little deeper for it.

The main problem with the music at the moment is that there's too much horrible generic dance music from artists like Flo Rida, Taio Cruz, Lady Gaga, LMFAO, Pitbull, etc. If it wasn't for those artists, I think the mainstream music scene would be really good at the moment.

Agreeing with the people above me, there's a lot of good and genuine new music past the charts. People say that rock and indie's dead because you hardly ever see it in the singles chart anymore; of course it isn't, you just need to spend more time looking for it, listening to specialist radio shows and so on

That's the issue I have with the charts; artists like Flo Rida & Taio were R&B/Hip hop artists until a few years ago - now they've changed to making crap dance records because it's the thing that gets you in the chart at the moment. The same could be said for a lot of other manufactured pop acts

Yeah, that's true. That has annoyed me a lot too.

It's interesting the other way around, how almost every new artist that has emerged since 2007 has been a generic electropop singer. It will be interesting to see what happens to those artists when mainstream music starts steering away from electropop. I'm pretty sure Lady Gaga and Pitbull will stop doing dance music in a few years since it won't be getting them into the charts anymore.

I dont think Gaga did it to conform, and remember she was the biggest electro singer of the times. So its not to do with conformity. She is talented too (songwriting etc). Taio's early stuff was ok but nothing special, even from an R&B perspective. His new material (2nd album) was catchier and better IMO. His debut was ok but lukewarm musically. Pitbull could go into reggaeton, he speaks spanish and there is a big latin market. I think most artists will survive as they have strengths in other areas, be it vocally, or dancing ability/songwriting. Gaga was great on You and I, and being non electro is better for her actually. Beyonce showed she can do whatever and make good music. I think people changed directions, but didnt copy each other.

Some music made in early 2011 has just come out now/will be out soon, so its not a case of bandwagoning at all. If you listen to guetta v gaga the music is electro but not similar at all.

I think its mainly Guetta to blame. He did start (in terms of dance) this whole feat. DJ business especially with big recording artists and his club records became hits (mainly here, he didnt get many big US hits before) and so people got used to it. Are you in your early to mid twenties? Music never seems quite as good as when we're teenagers.

I don't think its really fair to lump Lady Gaga and Beiber together though.

Has anyone been watching those old Top of the Pops shows from 1976 and 1977? I'm afraid a lot of pop / chart music was just as shit back then as it is now. It was just more varied shit back then. Now everything sounds like it was created on an army of ZX81s, all churning out the same turgid, uninspiring dross for the unthinking masses.

People today seem to have been beaten into submission. Apathy rules the day. Everyone's happy as long as they have their mobile phones and their 60 crappy TV channels and their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

What the hell has happened to the spirit of rebellion? Where are the angry young men (and women)? The world's going down the pan and all everyone wants to do is switch their brains off and dance. When they got the opportunity to riot did they storm Parliament and overthrow the government? Did they storm down the corridors of power, tearing down the symbols of oppression and tyranny? No, they f***ing went shopping. Bunch of feeble c*nts.

Rebel for goodness' sake! Punk had to happen in '76 because everything was so damn boring. Now the music scene is full of the same boring farts, except they're not the old rock dinosaurs but castrated pretty boy mannequins and vacuous girls concerned about nothing but shoes and lipstick.

To expand on Eraserhead's theme, in the 90s there was the rave scene, which was pretty impressive.
Todays music is just as good and as bad as years gone by, only now you can find what you like on the "net".
England and the world is going t*ts up and the only attitude and angst in music today, that I can find is in artists like Tom Waits and PJ Harvey.(relatively old f@rts).
Where's the anger, rebellion and idealism of the brats of today, this is the music I want to hear!

Well I didn't even have to look at your post count to see you're new to these forums. Someone starts a thread like this seemingly every week. Honestly, I'm surprised that whenever it happens, someone doesn't just link to the version of the thread that came before it.

Personally I have music tastes spanning several decades. There's some music nowadays that I like and other music I don't, same goes for other times.

I know this has been said time and time again, but good music exists! You just have to go looking for it. Not to say that all chart music is bad, I listen to some of it but most of my library is made up of artists who have never seen commercial success.

I'm quite young myself but with a few exceptions (Wilco, Radiohead,Foo Fighters etc) I mainly have a preference for music from the 50's-80's, mainly 60's. For new music I rely a lot on the old rock dinosaurs such as Paul McCartney (thank god he's still around making music and touring), Springsteen, Brian Wilson and Beach Boys (Looking forward to the reunion!!

), Dylan etc.
