Why is the X Factor making idols of thugs, drug abusers and a porn star?

Thats the headline of a DM article in todays press. Not that everything they've reported is accurate

Will this affect the contestant's votes? I would say so.

Criminal records previously disqualified people from applying - when did this change?

Why pick on Sterling from Rough Copy? Just because he has cousins who were convicted of a crime is he a criminal too? FFS  Anyway as long as the contestants served their time for what they did and have since changed, who cares?

If Tamera's assault was soo bad why wasn't she charged! The press are making it bigger than it is. I have saw fights in playgrounds by both girls and boys most weeks. If they ever went on X Factor would they get this hate!

The fact is this happened when she was 14, as an immature teenager. The fact the press mentioned it and then stopped shows that not really many care about it

I think reading right wing rags like the Daily Mail is never good for the brain.

You might actually believe everything they print. You might even let them affect your judgment.

Are people intrinsically good or bad? Is there never any grey area?

Is no one allowed to make mistakes? Humans are messy and frail and no one is perfect. What gives us the right to judge them?

The Tamera story is confirmed and that's not a mistake, its mob like behaviour and is assault of the controlling, feeling of power, dehumanising variety, which makes it particularly nasty.

Telling someone to kiss your shoes or you will beat the shit out of someone, then carrying through with it... Those are the actions of someone with a problem, not an immature mistake. That is just trivialising what she did and is not really an acceptable thing to do.

One thing I cannot stand are violent thugs, they do a lot of emotional damage to people and are particularly unpleasent people.

    Sorry if that upsets you.

I thought it said 15 in the article? That's only a year ago then....

People can change. If you see them act like thugs, take drugs or partake in porn then you can say I told you so but were you really the same person you were a few years ago?

Honestly, people do tend to be yes, change tends to happen gradually over the longer term. We are talking about a year here, not a few years.

    How about this.

This is a singing contest, judge it on that.

Slur campaigns are pathetic, and especially if they are born out of the Daily Mail.

Maybe it was around the time that they realised the hypocrisy of banning contestants with criminal records, while having a judge on the panel with a criminal record.

Was the criminal record thing a blanket ban or did it just apply to serious offences??

You would think they would have learnt something after Tulisa the female drug dealer. Obviously they havent.

I don't get the problem with someone who has done porn. That's just sex and provided all participants are willing, it harms nobody and the content/fact isn't presented on the show or excessively in the media due to young people watching, then that's a null issue really.

Making an issue of that is just **** shaming really.

Drugs, violence and stuff like that is not the same as it does a lot of harm. The gun love pictures are very unwise and I don't them that particularly endearing.

After having Cheryl as a judge for 3 years they can't really discriminate against contestants with criminal records... Which is a good thing IMO as everyone deserves a chance to learn from their crime and move on with their life.

As long as they regret it and then move on to do good things for victims as well as themselves then yes.
Im not sure that is the case here.

As long as they learn from it and don't commit any further crimes then that should be that. The past should be the past.

Have you watched Orange is the New Black? Convicts need to be given second chances to start their lives anew after prison. Show some empathy!

I dont think contestants with criminal records were ever banned. They do checks and make decisions case by case.

What was that girl called who talked in her VT about being in prison? Rachel? she was in Dannii's overs

Well you can argue that convicts have served their time and had time to reflect. But they shouldn't be out on pedestals and considered role models until they have done good for some period of time.

Anyway, the twisted irony is that if these people had empathy themselves they wouldn't need to ask for empathy and acceptance themselves would they.

And "orange is the new black"... Is that saying what I think it is? If so, then what a ridiculous, borderline insulting, statement to make.

They aren't making idols of anybody!
This year more than ever we have a crop of people who will be completely forgotten about when it hits 2014

I'm boycotting X Factor in protest against Tamera being on the show.

There are probably people who haven't been involved in the sorts of crimes described in the article who were eliminated before the live rounds. They are more deserving of a place in the final 12.
If Tamera's assault was soo bad why wasn't she charged!

She should have been charged and jailed.

X Factor is a right-wing capitalist concept which generates revenue to manipulate minds. I wouled therefore expect a higher percentage of Daily Mail and Sun readers to watch it than Guardian and Independent readers.

And then to add insult to injury they go on X Factor and are given a sob stories to manipulate viewers to sympathise with them. Tulisa was even able to do that as a judge.

This isn't about what happened a few years ago. These are recent crimes. Sometimes viewers are told people have changed when they haven't.

X Factor is past it's sell by date
The producers love stories like this as it's still all publicity for the show.

The Daily Mail is a foul tabloid that ironically cries foul far too often. They're practically the Daily Star these days. Nothing they print holds any weight.
