I honestly don't care about backwards compatibility. I just won't throw away my PS3 when the next gen come out and I can use that if I want to play old games.
There's a good chance I will go with the next Xbox anyway, due to the expected cross-compatibility with my PC and Windows tablet anyway. So there's never going to be backwards compatibility to my PS3 anyway!
I had a PS1 and a PS2, I never had original Xbox. When I heard there was no backwards compatability I made the switch to microsoft as it was cheaper.
If the next gen isn't b/c either it will be a long long time before I upgrade as I still really enjoy the 360 and I never buy ANY electronic item when they are first out.

That policy could backfire though. Both the PS3 and Wii were fully b/c when they first launched, but this was removed in later versions.
It wouldnt put me off but when i switched from my PS2 to 360 i picked up the Halo games off the original XBOX that i had never played, they were dirt cheap and really good, so like someone said earlier in the thread if the PS4 is BC i would be tempted to get one so i can play the games i have missed during the PS3 run.

Keeping the current consoles when I get the next ones isn't an option, due to:
- Cost. I'd likely need to trade in the 360 & PS3 to get the next version of each.
- Space. No room to keep the old ones if I get the new ones.
- Power. No free sockets for the old ones if I get the new ones.
- TV connections. No free sockets for the old ones if I get the new ones.
