    If he got thumped on the plane then his eye wouldn't be a shiner when he stepped off as surely the bruise takes time to show.

    I speak from experience - I tripped on a paving stone and whacked my face. It looked ok but over the next couple of days I got the most glorious shiner, amazing shades of purple it was.

    It's a telly black eye. It shows up quicker. :D
