I think it did, unfortunately. The US media pretty much tore her to shreds after that performance which is pretty unfair considering many of the most popular US artists aren't amazing live performers.
I think this song is incredible, but then I think that about every song she creates. Hopefully she may experience some more mainstream sucess with it in the US.
To be honest, I don't think the media would be like this if this was say Kesha giving a performance like that.
But I think the hype and how she was perceived to be this new Adele like flawless singer with GOOD material just made the whole SNL performance seem disappointing. I've also heard the comparison of her being the hipster's version of Britney Spears with a much better voice.
Maybe she's like Frank Ocean who I don't know much about but I've heard that he has great songs, a great talent, etc. Would you want to see him live? Not sure
Maybe Lana Del Rey is like that? She has great songs but I'm not sure I would pay to see her live but you could say to that for many other singers....

Now she can sing at least on her tours as good as in the studio.
SNL was 15 months ago! In fact she totally redeemed herself on Letterman just a week or so later but no-one seems to mention that performance. I guess it doesn't fit their agenda. SNL came way too early in her career but if I was her manager i wouldn't have turned it down either. A gamble that didn't pay off but luckily the show has no influence anywhere else except the US. I'm convinced the US will eventually come round to a talent as big as Lana's, iI's just that they are sometimes slow on the uptake (it's taken P!nk years to take off there, for instance). .
Just for tami and anyone else who's not seen Lana live here's another link of Lana being all kinds of amazing live singing Born to Die at her Stockholm show. She sounds frickin' awesome! Look at how much the crowd are loving it. Why's that? Cause Lana puts on one hell of a show that's why. Best of all said link takes you through to vids of the rest of the show. All great stuff.
In truth you can watch any of her recent shows and be stunned by what you see. Or for that matter the live shows she did last year, so many good ones. It is a total misconception Lana can't sing live. Rating her off the likes of the early stage fright riddled SNL performance from 15 months is getting absurd now and I think in truth its become an excuse for some pretty vile people to justify their hate. As Koney says she was fabulous on Letterman and few other TV shows around the same time, too, so why was it ever used as the benchmark?
Look at what your eyes and ears are telling you watching these videos, not whatever trolls and a few ill informed hater journalists make up about her. It’s sad that they ever made the mud stick, but she's been washing it off bit by bit and she's come out shinning.
The new song Young and Beautiful is a corker! My only whinge would be where's the video? Why aren't the radio stations playing it? How much higher would it be in the itunes chart if they did!?! I think the real exposure for this song is when it plays in the film, could well see this track going in and out of the charts as people watch the movie.
How long more are people gonna keep rolling out the "love her recorded voice but I would never see her live" rubbish?!! That myth has been put to bed ages ago. Lana has been slaying on her European tour.
The song is very good but she has certainly done better.
Although this looks likely to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 this week as it was riding high in the 20's for a good while. Not expecting anything massive but anything higher than #91 (Video Games) would be awesome. A video could give her a much needed hit in the states.
Well for a song released with no radio airplay, no video, little publicity and only hardcore Lana fans aware of its release its outstanding.
But then you think mmm. Doesn't it deserve better than that? Aside from being one of the lead songs from the much otherwise hyped movie soundtracks of the year its just a great song that deserves a wider audience. Are the movie people actually going to get behind it at all over the next few weeks or is its release just effectively their internet viral advertising campaign.
I just hope it gets used memorably in the movie itself. C'mon Great Gatsby do Lana proud she's given you a great song here. Many are saying its the best song on the soundtrack.
A video was supposed to be released a day before the song was released so no idea what's happened to it. If it does exist then maybe they are holding back its release until the film is actually out? The song is again rising up the US iTunes chart, probably due to the airing of this on US TV.
Whoa! The moment it plays, it just made that trailer. Spectacular images, would not complain if the video is just bits of the movie with a few shots of Lana singing inbetween. Baz Lurmann sure knows how to turn on the eye candy. Very nice to hear it’s still growing in the US too, certainly making an impact there in the right circles. I do hope that continues!
Ok, I'll trust in Baz & co. once more to do her proud. Yeah suppose it may well indeed be all part of some clever release strategy to release it early on the web for the fans and then hit the mainstream with the full fireworks video when the film actually comes out.
Wait a minute, I thought Lana couldn't sing live? That was excellent. Especially as it seems like the band played a bit of a trick on her by playing the song.
That brief forgetting of the words accompanied with a laugh just added to the charm of her singing the song totally out of the blue, presumably with no practice before hand. She was brilliant. She's got to sing it every time now!
Glad you're loving it TH14. Yep its definitely another Lana classic.
