I tried to post this link half an hour ago but the website (daveproxy.co.uk) seemed to be down for some reason. Anyway, here you go AnniesBoobs:

Whenever you visit a website the data is sent to your Internet Service Provider who then pass it to you. As your ISP is based in your country any website that restricts it's content to your country simply won't provide the content to your ISP. A proxy server acts as an intermediary, whereby it receives the data then sends it to your ISP. If the proxy server is based in the country where the content isn't restricted it's as if your ISP is based in that country and the restriction is bypassed.
...I probably made that sound more complicated than it is.

I'm not sure if you can watch iPlayer. Just try it I guess. The thing is, if the owners of a website like iPlayer notice a lot of traffic going through one particular address that isn't a registered ISP (like daveproxy) they might well add that address to their blacklist, at which point you'll have to look for another UK-based proxy.

Clear as mud?

The twitter link I posted above has links to youtube for highlights and bots, and also does live streaming of programs. Content's typically uploaded within minutes of broadcast, and doesn't need a proxy to view outside the UK.

Might be an easier option...
