Impressive results. I'm sure someone can work out roughly how much profit Apple makes per device, and get a good idea of the sort of margins it enjoys that other companies can only dream of.

According to some here, just subtract $10 from each unit to calculate the profit margin

I've got a shed load of Apple kit in my home (and loft!) and I don't pretend Apple hasn't made a fortune from me every time.
From iPods and iPod touches, to Mac Minis, to iMacs, iPads and a few MacBook (Pros and Airs). When it comes to the iPhone, I've been fortunate in that they've always been review models and came at no cost!
Now, I could say I felt them to be value for money - in terms of design, reliability (mostly) and resale value (due to desirability and price fixing to keep residuals high) - but let's not pretend they aren't making a small fortune from all of the above.
It's quite scary just how much Apple is making every year now, and that profit is coming from you and me. It does make me laugh when the hardcore fanboys try and suggest otherwise, as if the profit comes from some alternative, magical, source and that the laptop/desktop/phone/tablet/watch didn't somehow contribute much to that pile of cash.

Gross margin was 40.8%, compared with 39.3% over the same quarter last year.

Unfortunately for some on here, Tim Cook stated in the Q2 call that the breakdowns costs stated in the press and elsewhere are grossly inaccurate. It's difficult to know who to believe, TC or those that 'know the price' on the forum.
Tim Cook also commented on the long lead times for people ordering the Watch. They are 'learning about customer preferences', or in other words that 50% of people want a black Sport model!

There's lots of ways to spend money on costs, executive salaries being another Apple also spend big on stuff like buying up many of the car battery engineering specialists out there. So battery costs are in there too.
Anyway, I'd certainly say Apple may lay claim to Curtis Jackson's stage name for their £40 priced silicon band production cost.
Apple is a brand name that sells, actual goods are only a small part of that equation. Samsung as a brand is similar, that Edge has them realising people will actually pay for brand name+aesthetics as the main priority.
On aesthetics the watch is interesting, as the Apple Watch even needs to rewrite the meaning of time. That being that time naturally and symbolically revolves

It seems we agree, there is far more that goes into the price than a guesstimate of component costs.
It seems strange that having now shown that you understand that, you follow it up with another silly comment.
I've removed your edit from my quote as I do not have a clue what you are talking about.

I don't think anyone is suggesting otherwise. Just disagreeing with nonsense about how the parts and labour costs of the watch are about $10.
And maybe wondering why the fact that Apple make a profit is even such a big deal, or somehow sinister. They are a company, so of course want to make a profit.
But the main reason they have been making such huge profits in recent years isn't because they are somehow ripping people off, its mainly down to the sheer volume of units they are selling.
After all, they had similar profit margins back in the 90s, but they weren't reporting such big profits back then.
I think the overall message is 'changing the watch band is a craft'. You had best get it right first time, and yet, if you find the long strap long and the short strap short you really had better beware.

I think as a part of the appointment they need to have a strap bootcamp where the future victims learn to fasten the strap the way Ive had intended.

Seriously, the strap in that article, is that it?? How much do they charge for that?
Some good points there, reduced visibility in sunlight, calling from the watch with surrounding noise, automatic turning of display on/off not always reacting as expected. And link bracelet for £379, WTF?
I got my confirmation email at 8:37 and got my watch on Friday I'm loving it so far agreed that the battery life seems fine for my usage and I'll be interested in using Apple pay on it as I found paying for my Starbucks coffee with it this morning a breeze
That sounds like something out of the future, or maybe it's just that I'm really behind I dunno!
It sounds like the smaller sizes 38mm are being sent out a lot faster than the larger 42. There are some very angry people on Macrumors; it's hilarious! :D

I thought it made things easier no more rummaging around in my handbag for my purse or phone

Watches will be added to the list next quarter of course....
Dover Street Market is not listed on that online appointments page where stock is updated and available daily.

IFixit should buy it as a teardown video.
Ha ha, and it actually looked good.
It would been a lot easier if he started with a silver one!

Nope, they sold in the 10s and 100s of thousands, not in the 10s of millions.

Thats a good idea. Should take all of 2 seconds.
Apparently that's not enough. Also they should learn how to wipe their arse without the watch falling down the toilet
