All these adverts on TV for online bookies, bingo, casinos, poker, it's getting out of hand, there must be thousands of people whose lives are being ruined, surely it's time for a crackdown by the government, or are they making a load of money out of it?

why stop everything people enjoy, just because a few people cannot control themsleves.

that's the general trouble with a nanny state.

I agree. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

I dare say the government will be doing rather well out it, so I don't expect them to do anything about it.

I'm not saying make it totally illegal but there needs to be more regulation.

I don't really trust online gambling anyway. So easy for them to fix it.

Indeed, the very least the authorities could do would be to ban them giving you a free £20 (or whatever) stake for when you first start playing. Your own money or nothing.

As for the adverts I actually thought one was about gambling addiction the one where the guy has a fruit machine following him around

I don't know about other people but if I gambled and then started having hallucinations about a Fruit Machine following me around everywhere I went I would think maybe I have a slight problem

It's not just internet gambling. I saw an advert on tv yesterday for fruit machine gambling on your mobile phone. First £5 free but obviously they want you to spend a lot more afterwards and I can see how people would do so because its so easy and available.

Fortunately it was followed by Kerry Katona's new advert for payday loans.

I wonder if it occurs to any of the players that a company that can afford to give away £5 of free play like that probably has the odds well stacked in their favour?

what they don't usually tell you is that the £5 is "bonus" money and, quite often, can't be withdrawn. you usually have to wager something in the region of 10-15 times the bonus amount before you can even think about withdrawing any winnings - if, of course, you do win anything.

so it's technically not "free money" i suppose.

It is also those silly Facebook games that involve a lot of money to progress further that encourage people to get into further debt.

So how exactly is gambling getting out of hand?

Or is this another one of those 'I don't like something, I have to be outraged' threads?

No one is forcing anyone to spend money on these games.

It is easy to spend a lot of money online very quickly. There are no restrictions on how much a person should be spending a day or how much time a person is wasting.

All it says is a rather lame "Be Gamble Aware" which is ridiculous in a recession.

    And?

If people want to waste their money and get in debt, thats their choice.

Well it encourages people to beat their friends and this often is costly.

It also expects you to pay money to continue playing once you have used your lives up or wait 30 minutes.

Tell that to the weak willed who have no control on their spending.

It gives you the choice to spend money. It's not a requirement.

Console gaming does the same. Day one download content, expansions etc.

No one seems bothered by that.

Parents are. DLC is always going to get more expensive due to greedy developers exploiting people.
