iPhone and GPS/Airplane Mode

It would appear that GPS now continues to function when an iPhone is in Airplane Mode. Historically, this has not been the case as a certain forum member (Alan!) regularly pointed out.
Now, I don't know if this is new in 8.3, or results from a change in hardware (I probably haven't tested it since getting the iPhone 6 last year) but I noticed it completely by accident. This morning, I was on a flight home from Dublin. About ten minutes prior to landing in Manchester, I took a few pictures. I was surprised later to find that they were correctly geotagged. Obviously I had Airplane Mode selected and hadn't manually enabled wifi, so there were no connections of any sort.
I just went for a walk with my phone in Airplane Mode and was able to see my location the whole time.
Does anyone know when this change was made?
