There's something that used be on everywhere when I was younger in the early 80's.
You used have TV shows, Adam Ants 'Stand and Deliver' and nearly every sketch show seemed to have a Dick Turpin 'Money or your life' sketch.
I think there was a Carry on Dick, Carry On film?
Never here it mentioned much anymore.
Thank fcuk if you ask me used to get on my tits

    I know what you mean.

You don't see quick sand on TV much anymore either. I used to be terrified of the stuff as a kid!

Dick Turpin was a much misunderstood character.

In real life he was an evil nasty bad tempered sod, not a lovable rogue as shown in books/tv and films. He got arrested in York for shooting a chicken in a rage, was correctly identified and then hung.

I had a nice winner on Dick Turpin when he beat his much more fancied stable mate, Canford Cliffs, in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury 2 or 3 years ago..............

    So..............not all bad...............

He used to stay at a Coaching Inn which is now a Pub in my local town. Remnants of it's days as a Coaching Inn are still evident too.....though Turpin has long gone! A couple of miles out of the Town Centre there is a large estate which used to be farm fields when I was a young lad. A rough track and path led down toward these fields and at the bottom stood a huge old Oak tree which was used as a Gallows. Whether or not Turpin met his end there is a much debated local matter.

The tree has long gone and the road which goes past the estate is named Gallowstree Lane.

Apparently his old schoolteacher recognised his handwriting after he was arrested but using a nom de guerre.

    Turpin, not the chicken.

Some of the feats attributed to him were actually done by the highwayman Swift Nick Nevison.

    Turpin, silly.

Turpin used to interrogate victims for their wealth by holding them in front of a fire.
Most of his fictional nice guy image came from other highway men.
Speed cameras and fixed penalty tickets are the new highway robbery.

Our son thought he was called Dick Turnip until he was about eleven, because we were such evil parents we couldn't bring ourselves to tell him the truth. :o

Until proven otherwise, Robin Hood was fiction.
