Eating Bitumen As A Child

My parents were comparing childhood tales. They discovered that each had taken to eating chunks of bitumen, which was to be used on the roads, when they were children. Apparently it tasted like licorice.

Does anyone else have similar memories or were my parents just strange?

My mun still loves licorice!

    My uncle used to eat bitumen, he's turned into a right cyclepath. :o

    My other half said that when she were a nipper, she used to like licking metal gates and fences...

    I used to do that - and lampposts :o.
    Other strange eating habits I had as as a child inlcude raw bacon and sausage meat, dandelion leaves and Go-Cat. I love licquorich so I might give bitumen a try.

    I used to lick my finger, stick it in a plug socket, lick my finger again, and stick it in the plug socket again.... I used to spend hours doing this until my mum found me :o

    Dear me... you lot are right odd 'uns! :D;)

    The weirdest thing I used to eat when I was kid were raw peas which I would steal from Mum's veggie patch.

    Oh... hang on... I do also vaguely remember a phase that me and my friends went through where we would harvest and suck on the juice of a particular flower stem whenever we would find it (and, for the life of me, I can't remember what it was) but the juice was really, really sour and acidic. It was yum. :)

    I love the smell of the iron chains they use on swings. When I was younger I used to lick them. Even at my age I still cut through the park to have a sneaky go on the swings on the way back from the pub just to get the smell of iron on my hands. I used to suck magets too...:o Ok nuter alert!

    I used to lick walls and eat the ice from the freezers in Bejams :o

    raw sausage, oxo cubes and custard paste before it is added to the hot milk!

    Everyone has missed crap out.

    Every child has eaten their own crap at one time or another.

    Remember when my son did it. It was around christmas time and i thought he had stolen a chocolate off the tree (he was about 8 months and crawling)

    I used to like raw sausages too and sludge (half coke, half fresh orange juice).

    If I ever did that... which I'm sure I did not because contemplating the alternative is just waaaay too disgusting for words... then I really wouldn't want to dwell on it or admit to it!
