I have the Sony Xperia U, the screen looks amazing, very sharp! And it works very well when typing even though its quite narrow. Very very very responsive which is good

I hated touch screens before so I stuck with Blackberry for many years (had the Curve 8900, Bold 9700 and then the Blackberry Torch) but decided to get a 4S last year and I haven't regretted it.

I find them fine for the increased viewing size that they offer compared to "standard" mobile phones, but the user input I could give or take.

I've had touchscreen phones since the P800 nine or ten years ago. At the time I thought the screen size was amazing believe it or not - amusingly the universal response from the 95% of people who didn't own one at the beginning was "what a brick, I could never deal with that". How times change.
The principal reason I loved it was the handwriting recognition - it was so much better than multi-tap. I don't think I could go for a non-touchscreen phone for that reason, unless it had a keyboard, but the keyboards I've seen are either unwieldy or small. I think the SE P910 had the right idea - among many other brilliant innovations, which to my mind make it a classic in the history of mobile phones, was the ability to use the touchscreen, or the fully working number pad (as opposed to the P800 which had a number pad that simply pressed little pointers against the touchscreen underneath). The pad could either be used as a flip, or removed completely so users had the best of both worlds. |

That was when I moved from SonyEricsson to the HTC TyTn running Windows Mobile (a dreadful phone), but it had a big touchscreen and a slide out full qwerty keyboard. After that I was forced to get a Nokia e71 by my employer. Great phone (ie far fewer dropped calls than the HTC) but no touch screen, and I really missed that feature. Now I have an 18 month old HTC Desire S. The best phone I've ever owned! It's out of contract, but I can't see any phone on the market that's better for the way I use it. |

This could have been me writing this! I too hated touch screen phones. Stuck with BlackBerry phone and loved the physical keyboard. Just upgraded to the iPhone 4s and I too won't switch back. The touch screen on this phone is pretty impressive.

My first touch screen phone was a cheap £25 Vodafone own unit with a stylus. i thought I would give it a try on a sim only contract to see what all the fuss was about.
I was a bit unresponsive sometimes and being small, I found I had to use the stylus most of the time. but I found i could text faster on it than with a normal phone. So when my sim only contract was coming to the end I decided to try a better touch screen phone, the HTC wildfire and I loved it. I changed the keyboard to touchpal and used the swipe function. Sadly my little wildfire died and I had to buy a cheap phone to see me through the last six months of my contract so I got the Huawei ascend g300, it is faster and smoother than my old wildfire. Considering that I hated the idea of a touch phone a few years back, I don't think I could go back to a normal phone, sure they are not perfect and there are some things that annoy me, like just touching the screen in the wrong place and being taken somewhere I don't want to go, but all in all I prefer touch screens on phones. I don't think I would ever have a desktop or laptop with one and I got no interest at the moment in a tablet. |

As you say, the P800 and P910 were years ahead of their time, as well as being fantastically ergonomically designed. They were such a dream to use in everyday situations. Funny to think now that so many people refused to even investigate them because they thought they were too big. BTW, Wasn't the T68 the first colour phone as well? I remember it fondly - it was my first contract phone. Quote:

I like them. I've been using a fully touch screen phone since 2009 and now I couldn't imagine not using one. The earlier touch screens from the mid 2000's or so were either over sensitive or not sensitive enough but modern ones work well.

I have not too long ago, got a hand-me-down in the form of a Samsung omnia 7. Its my first touch screen, and has taken some getting use to, but I really like it now. My issue since getting is, getting use to a touch screen only keyboard. Sometimes I feel like I fat thumbs! I made so many mistakes at first, but I am getting use to it now though. And the screen, I have to wipe it alot, Im a very neat and tidy person, and all the fingerprints and 'scroll lines' just annoy me. I know its a touch screen, but, as soon as I see them, I have to wipe the screen so its nice shiny clean screen again. While its not a major issue, as I dont want to go back the old style, it would be better if some genius out there, created a screen that had not touch marks on them.

The touch screen on my iPhone is perfect. The touch screen on My HTC Desire HD is not sensitive enough at times (have to press hard for it to respond) and too sensitive at other times (just need to hover near the screen and it registers). This makes writing a text labourious.
So it really depends on the phone and each phone may be suitable for different people. If you don't like touch screens then maybe you should try a number of phones to see which one suits you the best. |
