I'm a bit scared of photographing people in public without them noticing (not just because of their reaction, but you get more natural poses when people are not conscious of having their picture taken). I feel a bit like a surreptitious stalker
P.S. Hope no one recognises themselves or if it's a friend
Ovalteenie - shoot from the waist if your not too concerned with composition. Or sit down somewhere and subtly snap away. :P
If you have something less conspicious such as a twin lens reflex people will probably have no idea what you are doing. Big SLRs do draw much attention.

I tried shooting from the waist but it was shooting blind & i got rubbish shots at funny angles or blurriness.
I have a compact-style camera but still feel awkward pointing it at someone as i'm scared they might react negatively so i'm doing it behind them

I think most people feel the same way!
The photos look fine to me.
I would crop out the tree on the left in the ciggie photo.
The advantage of doing street photography with a DSLR is that you can use a long lens if you don't want to get in close
It's also better if there is more than one person taking photos.
