Limitations of Windows DVD Maker

I have just started using Windows DVD Maker to make short presentations of photographs with a musical soundtrack, and have been very pleased with its simplicity, and the fact that the DVDs play correctly on our DVD players!
However, I have been wondering about making longer shows where the transition times are different for different pieces of music etc, ie a sequence where the photos last for say 10 seconds followed by a section with 5-second displays. Similarly, I would like to have one section with dissolves and another section with wipes.
It doesn’t seem that this type of variation can be achieved with Windows DVD Maker. You seem to be stuck with the same display length for the whole DVD and similarly you can only have say, dissolves for the whole DVD.
Is there a way round this with Windows DVD Maker?
