Woman Mauled To Death By Dog In London

A woman in her 40s has died after being savaged by a dog at a property in south London.

The victim suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, in Wallington, near Sutton. Scotland Yard said the dog - a Belgian mastiff - was shot dead by police firearms officers.
There was at least one other person at the property at the time of the attack, but no-one else was injured.

A puppy has also been removed from the property in Demesne Road.

Police and paramedics were first called out at 8.57pm on Thursday, following reports of an animal attack.

A post-mortem examination was being arranged and next of kin had yet to be informed. Detectives from Sutton Borough are investigating.

Belgian mastiffs - which can grow to a height of 32 inches (78cm) and weigh as much as 50kg - are not classified as dangerous under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
The law refers to four kinds of dog which are banned: pit bull terrier; Japanese tosa; dogo Argentino; and fila Braziliero.

Belgian mastiffs are said to be "calm and obedient" on website dogbreedinfo.com.

..................................................................

I bet you ten pounds that she was looking after the dog for someone for the holidays......

Poor lady, what a terrible thing to happen. These dogs are usually quiet and friendly but are HUGE and could do a massive amount of damage very quickly.

I feel sorry for her and her family what a terrible thing to happen just before Christmas.

unfortunately like with most dog attacks we will never know the reality of what actually happened, yes it's very upsetting.

50kilos is certainly not huge more like medium sized my dog is 71 kilos,.

Most dogs are gentle loving and loyal and bigger dogs tend to have better temperments than smaller ones.

IMO no type of dog should be banned but scrupulous breeding regulations should be imposed on breeders and owners should be required by law to learn about things such as socislisation and bite inhibition and what it takes to be a responsible owner of course for all we know there could be an underlying health condition in the dog that caused his actions but they will not be known as autopsies aren't done.

I also believe that these dogs should be assessed by professionals in an attempt to find out what went wrong so these things can be learned from

Attacks are still quite rare when you considerr the number of dogs in this country they also usually happen in the dogs own home without their owner present

I'd agree with this. My dog (a bouvier des flandres) looks large...so big that I often hear people say "Look at the size of that dog", but he's only 110lbs, which places him in the medium to large bracket. What type of dog do you have TWS?

With my dog breed, they can be known to be naturally very agressive, stubborn and fiercely protective of their owners/property. You also need to watch them around other dogs/animals. They're used alot by police in Europe and can be seen competing in Shutzhund trials.

See this link of the 18 Top Guard Dog breeds for more info: http://caninebreeds.bulldoginformation.com/guardian-dogs.html

Being aware of all of that before I brought my puppy home made me very aware that I needed to be ultra-responsible in his training, upbringing, healthcare and diet etc. to make sure he didn't become a menace to either me or the community I live in.

I can proudly say that because of our constant training combined with weekly attendance at a dog training school, that my dog has passed both the Kennel Club puppy foundation award and the Bronze Good Citizen Award. His next exam will be for the Silver and the trainers have said we should sail through that too.

Too many people take on dogs without fully realising the commitment involved. They skimp on the research and pass good breeders by, skimp on the diet and feed a load of crap, skimp on the socialisation and make excuses for the dog, and then skimp on the training and blame it on the breed.

If they treated their children that way, would they be as surprised if the kid grew up to be a rogue?

Well I suppose it's a couple of months since this one was done -

    In a nutshell

    Some posters like dogs
    Sime posters like cats

Some dogs are owned by irresponsible owners
Some cats are owned by irresponsible owners

Some posters think children are at danger from dogs
Some posters think babies are at danger from cats.

Foxes are sometimes mentioned in the debate as are wolves and tigers.

Me - I like both and believe that sometimes terrible tragedies happen in life no matter what care you take.

I have never heard of your dog breed before. What a beauty. Do you ever cut his hair? Has he got his tail docked?
How about the South african BoerBoel, looks a lovely dog. Haven't heard of any of those on that link.
Oh I love the Dogue de Bordeaux! I am sure that's the one they used in Turner & Hooch. I never knew what dog it was until now.
edit: just seen at the bottom it said it was used in that film!

Thanks for the comments. Bouviers are really beautiful looking dogs (in my opinion anyway) and everyone who owns one often ends up with either 2 or 3 more. Put it this way; I never heard of anyone who's owned a bouvier saying, "I once owned a bouvier"...they always tend to stick with the breed for life after owning their first one. Despite their natural guarding and protection abilities, they are amazing with their owners and families. They come in a variety of colours too, not just grey ;) :

    Chocolate: http://puppydogweb.com/gallery/bouvierdesflanders/bouvierdesflandres_dallow.jpg

I do cut the hair of my dog, and yes, he is docked. Makes him look like a bear!

The South African BoerBoel is a massive dog. I met on once, and the owner was training by "automatic training" as the dog was so huge, there was just no way she could 'force it' to do something LOL.

DDB are gentle giants (if you can handle the slobber). My breeder owns both Bouviers and Dogue des Bordeaux. My choice goes to the Bouvier though as it doesn't shed hair, so it's been great for my OH who actually has an allergy to dogs!

Sorry to take this thread off topic original poster.

Cor blimey, look at the size of the grey one!

Yes, on topic. It's awful about the woman mauled. And the media usually only give half a story. Thankfully attacks are very rare, in the grand scheme of things really.

My cats an evil bitch :D she does far more harm than my Weaten terrier ever has. My daughter is always getting scratched.
She will insist on stopping stroking the cat though!

People are always quick to blame the dog in cases where someone is attacked, sad though that the attacks are often it is someone provoking the dog.

There was a case of a kid that was savaged by a dog, everyone was condemning of the dog and it turned out that the kid had poked it in the eye and pulled its ears, of course in a situation like that the dog is going to attack.

Of course the kid would not know better at that age so what happened was awful but hard to blame the dog.

I do wonder whether this woman did something to provoke the dog

Unusual case this. Mastiffs are known for being gentle. Even when provoked the worst they will normally do is pin down the attacker without injuring them

I see from the report a puppy has been removed could be the dog was protecting her pup - actually could be any number of reasons.

It's a terrible thing to happen, but why keep such a large dangerous animal in your home in the first place? Seems a bit stupid to me.

S'funny, my niece used to come around here and play with my Spaniel (the lab' was smart enough to keep out of her way) and she'd sit the dog up and cuddle her, pull on her (big, floppy) ears, dance with her chase her around the room and, in general, do all sorts of things that are guaranteed to make a dog excited.

I could always tell when my spaniel was starting to get a bit too excited so I'd call her back to me and make her lie still for a few minutes.

When my sister in law bought an Akita it came as no great shock to me that the dog, eventually, bit my niece and they had to get rid of it.

As I've said before, after this, when my SIL asked me to lock the dogs outside when she visited in future I simply told her not to bother bringing her daughter with her instead.

Far far far too many morons own these big dogs. Not all but you only have to visit some of the rough estates in my city to see thugs having huge dogs to show just hard they both are.

    Morons.

Not saying this poor lady fell into that category but why oh why would people want a pet that could literally rip you to pieces. Is it really worth the risk.

If that's tongue in cheek then don't read on, if serious please do.

If if were the SIL, I think I'd give visiting you a miss, no loss with that attitude. The child was probably terrified of dogs after what had happened to her. Shame on you uncle.

Yeah, I hate it when the dogs get the blame because, essentially, they've been brought up incorrectly.

I'm no great fan of dogs to be honest, and yes I prefer cats. However, it annoys me when people go on about 'dangerous breeds' and such like - there are few 'dangerous' breeds, only dangerous owners.

Take Staffies for instance - I know people call them chav trophies and such like, but brought up correctly, like Alsatians and Dobermanns for instance, they wouldn't hurt a fly. I was walking through town yesterday and this scrote was stood there with his Staffie on a leash, and it was literally lunging for passers-by with him yanking it back hard at the last minute, laughing every time.

I can see that poor animal being destroyed in the not too distant future, while the laughing moron will no doubt get his hands on another one and ruin that as well.

    Oh well.

I honestly think you should need a licence for certain breeds of dogs. My auntie recently had her Japanese Akita destroyed because it bit a visitor on her face.

Bla bla bla license this license that, this isn't PC that isn't PC... why don't people actually grow some balls for once in this country? Nobody has any idea how/if the dog was treated badly etc but I suppose everybody has to put their opinion across.

What decent dog owner would allow their dogs to be abused?
