Tax Dodger Exposed......and it's The Labour Party

"The Financial Times reports that the latest figures show that Labour paid only £14,000 in tax last year (versus the Tories’ £187,000) on total income of £33.3m (versus the Tories’ £25.4m)"

We all know what Ed Miliband's views on tax dodgers is:

".......when Google goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid paying its taxes, I think it’s wrong"

Ed is not adverse to doing a bit of legal tax dodging himself

"Briefly, for those of you who live on the same sheltered planet as me, it goes like this. Marxist academic Ralph Miliband owned a house in Edis Street, Primrose Hill. At some point after he died in 1994, his widow and two sons signed a "deed of variation" to his will that gave Ed and David each a 20% share in the house, which meant that on their mother's death they would pay inheritance tax only on the remaining 60%."

"Miliband, therefore, could own a separate house and not pay capital gains when he sold it. No evidence was offered that he does have a second home posing as a first. Nonetheless, one or two hard-working reporters uncovered the history of his home ownership, and newspapers, employing loaded phrases such as "tax ruse" and "shrewd", conveyed the impression of a ruthless moneymaker, so keen to make a buck that it was the prospect of capital gains tax rather than any more personal consideration that prevented his marrying the mother of his child. "The pair have legitimately avoided more than £135,000 in capital gains tax on the sale of three properties by being unmarried"

So Labour are better at managing finances than the Tories? Tell us something we don't already know.

If they're not paying their fair share of tax, they should be. Shame on them.

Now let's hear you rip into the likes of Google, Amazon etc

the Lib Dems paid just £14 tax

Guessing they had a lot of losses to offset :D

Seriously though, do we really expect political parties to be making a profit to tax?

The Google, Amazon etc ripping has been done to it's death. There's no need to do it now.

Do you not realize how much debt the Labour Party is in? The Tories are expected to go into the black this year.

The Labour Party is drowning in debt. They can't even manage their own party finances, never mind the country's finances.

I don't know why this would suprise anybody.

All of the three main parties are rotten to the core.

Labour are just as hypocritical as the Tories.

Niether the Conservative party nor the Labour party have dodged tax. Some members of both have no doubt!

So is the level of political debate at The Spectator? I have never read it, is it normally this dishonest?

I thought we knew all this when John Mills was telling us all about how the Labour Party were telling him how to make his large donation in the most "tax efficient" way, by giving them shares in JML IIRC.

Or perhaps I'm mistaken - people like to wax on about tax dodging rich Tory donors as if they don't exist in the Labour Party - instead only wholesome, above reproach institutions like our fine, respected trades unions donate members money with only the most scrupulous and rigorous processes.

Not in a topic about a political party it isn't.

This is tosh, just because an entity has a bigger turnover does not mean it makes a profit.

Wonder how much tax is paid on the Cameron family fortune. Most of which is stashed abroad.

I wonder how much tax Milliband paid on the proceeds on his Marxist dad's estate ?

Its valid as contrast is part of the toolkit of debate.

It's true - they're obliged to publish their finances and it's all out there in black and white. No worries about that.

re The Tories: My guess is that's not a thread they want to pull at.

Question: Have Labour paid back the Co-op debt (£4.5m)?

The Conservative Party isn't very good at spin unlike Labour to whom, since 1997 at least, it comes as second nature.

Perhaps that is why they elected him leader - they wanted somebody with specialised experience?
