Registering as disabled

While I was sorting out some bills the other day, I made mention of my disability (MS and Fibromyalgia) and was asked if I was registered as Disabled. Actually, I don't know!

I've found information on what I need to do, but I would like to hear from anyone who can advise on whether it is necessary and if it carries any benefits.

I'm on ESA and waiting for my DLA, so not those benefits!

As far as I know you can't do this any more. Now it just goes on what Benefits you receive etc (ie if you get high rate DLA for example).

Places that need to know if you have a disabilty, for whatever reason, generally have their own criteria for deciding if you do.

I think if you have a blue badge then you are automatically registered disabled with your issuing authority, same for other disability related concessions such as travel cards etc. I don't think you need to register per se though.

I've puzzled over this too. I also have MS but have no idea if I am classed as 'registered disabled' or what this actually means!

I think it only applies if you are in receipt of a 'disability concession' such as a blue badge. You will be on the authorities books as disabled.

The reason the term 'registered' is used is that Local Authorities did indeed used to keep a register of disabled people. This was stopped, for various reasons, some time ago.

The wording is still used but can apply to many criteria, the Blue Badge thing being one but not the only criteria.

It's an old term relating to when councils actually did keep track of how many disabled people lived within their area. It isn't used anymore.
