Rhys Thomas knew his Queen certainly
I agree about the General Knowledge answers BTW, I can get a lot of them right on CMM, but not as many on the normal MM
I got a few of the Father Ted answers
I accept that he is some sort of authority on Queen but does anyone here think he might have known in advance which questions were coming his way?
Most of his reponses on the specialist round were rapid fire and were given with total confidence. Yet when you watch his responses on the General Knowledge round he appears hesitant and a bit dithery on simple questions such as -
"What colour are Holly bush berries?".
I wonder who was the 'setter' for the questions on Queen.
Was it a friend of his?

( Nothing would surprise me on a celebrity show.)
I don't think he did but...
He has also worked closely with the rock band Queen over the past 5 years, producing seven of their DVDs, Queen Greatest Video Hits (2001), Queen Live at Wembley (2002), Queen: Greatest Video Hits II (2003), Queen Jewels (Japanese release) (2004), Queen On Fire: Live at the Bowl (2004), Queen + Paul Rogers: Return of the Champions and 'A Night At The Opera - 30th Anniversary DVD', making documentaries and directing new videos including "I Was Born To Love You".
TBH, he had an unfair advantage - 'Queen' has effectively been his job for the past five years. It would have been like Adam Bolton chosing 'politics' as his specialist subject .
If I was really bothered, I would say that he shouldn't have been allowed to have them as his subject. But its really not that important.
Finally, all the contestants were people I knew of! Steven Mangan was really good on there, but poor Sir Clive Sinclair. Only getting 4 for his specialist subject, which was related to his job! Although, it was a 70 year range, there have been lots of inventions during that time.

Clive Sinclair had a very broad subject, and that often turns out badly. He didn't do especially well on general knowledge either.
I was hoping Helen Skelton would win it; I really like her.

Steven Mangan played Dan in the famous "swingers" episode of I'm Alan Partridge
Wasn't there a female student a couple of years back who basically won University Challenge (as in the whole thing, not just one show) for her college virtually on her own? I can't remember her name but I do remember the phrase 'intellectual blitzkrieg'. I also remember they got the title taken away because one of the other team members wasn't actually a student when it was filmed...

It seems there has to be a celebrity version of everything these days.
Of course these people are no more intelligent than the general population.
The biggest joke is that in each episode I don't even know who most of the celebrities are.
It has been quite a boring series because the chosen subjects have been very obscure and dull in my opinion.
not one woman on tonights show, arent women interested in this kind of programme? i always wonder why so few are on University Challenge too
It was worse when they did celebrity Only Connect, because in the "normal" series there are usually one or more women on the teams, yet there wasn't a single female in the "celebrity" version. Apparently no women were interested in taking part, which raises the question of why they're willing to appear in other celebrity spin-offs but not OC.

The celebrity version of OC was terrible and was always going to be terrible so maybe thats why

Do you think they tailor the questions to the celebs IQ?
Frank Gardner was on the other evening & his general Knowledge questions were more like the 'normal' MM?
What a tit he looked !

If they do they got it wrong spectacularly wrong with Dr Pixie's questions then!...:D.
Even his GK questions were a lot easier than normal mastermind & he did score 20.
