    this sounds ridiculously complicated.....

im glad you seem to have sorted everything out. But cant you use some kind of debit card? Our debit card is linked automatically to visa...but even if it wasn't, surely most online things are prepared to just accept a debit card, and take money straight out of your bank? Or even paypal?
I have a basic bank account - no debit cards. Paypal you can't use everywhere and I wouldn't want to considering the trouble people have with that site!

Laura got her specs yesterday. They were so vague about when she should wear them... 'when concentrating' ... they said when reading, watching TV and on computer, so I am assuming they are just for up close. I think they are meant to stop her right eye moving around so much rather than anything else, but trying to get Laura not to wear them all the time is becoming a battle already!

School sent home her new timetable - I am angry, there is no swimming at all and no movement/dance, both of which were Laura's favourites, made her physically and mentally happy. Swimming is one sport she can do that doesn't hurt her feet, and the movement/dance benefited her in so many ways, getting physiotherapy in a fun and pleasant way. I've sent an e-mail to her teacher expressing my anger. This government runs big campaigns on the TV about kids getting healthier and fitter, and yet two forms of regular exercise have been taken away from Laura - and the other kids! Instead they get nearly a whole day of gardening! What is she, 75?

I guess they're focusing on some skills teaching here. I've got a friend who works with adults with learning difficulties - he teaches gardening to them. Irony is most of them probably end up in residential homes without a garden - but maybe I'm wrong.

Shame though about taking both swimming and dance away. Cutbacks?

Not sure how cutbacks can affect what they fill a certain hour or two with; the gardening is some project at a local allotment that goes on for a year and lasts most of Wednesday, listed under 'life skills'. Being a school for disabled, the swimming and movement were/are considered therapies as well as healthy activities, and cost them nothing as disabled kids swim free at the sports centre.

If this is all part of the new Academy, so far I'm not liking it! It's a special needs school, therapies are very much included in the day-to-day activity of all the children.

    It's one of those months.

Hospital today re Laura's epilepsy. In two weeks it's her orthopaedic (skeletal) check-up that she is to have now she's entering puberty. A good time to discuss her scoliosis, her feet, legs, balance, weight-bearing, etc.

She's like a car having an MOT :D

Mum's got to go for an operation to have the mass in her stomach removed, they will also remove the ovaries, womb and appendix! Talk about a clear-out, she'll be 2 stone lighter! Dad will obviously have to go into care for the duration :(

It does sound like swimming and dance could be victims of cutbacks though.:(

And I must emphasise, I don't actually agree with any of this, to me the child should come first.... But as I've only just realised.....An Academy school is nothing at all to do with the LEA, or any part of the Local council. Academies are funded directly from the govt, which is why teachers working within them, have to have a completely new contract etc...

At the moment most LEAs, will subsidise places like swimming pools from their education and other budgets. But for Academies, the money is taken away from the LEA and given directly to the schools. So if an Academy want to use a local swimming pool, The council will charge them directly. To make up for the fact that money used to come to them from the govt for things like this, but that budget has been cut. Im not sure that some of the headteachers and supporters of Academies realise how much LEAs actually do for the schools in their areas....:( Im sure in theory they have the money to pay for this....but...its not a limitless pot.

and then of course there is the on going costs of employing a swimming teacher, most of whom will be employed directly by the LEA... and the cost of sending staff with the children to the swimming pool etc....and also transport costs...and the time lost travelling to and from the swimming pool ...

A secondary school near us, was meant to be a specialist in performing arts, but when they became an Academy recently, they lost all their funding for performance arts, so all the specialist teachers left or lost their jobs. Which was hard on my friends daughter who mid way through her GCSEs had to lose her dance option.:(
maybe Laura's school has lost some or all of their dance teachers? In our area, the LEA used to fund the peripatetic dance and music teachers, who would then go into LEA schools. This service has been cut back considerably. AND if the school has become an Academy, funded directly from the govt, this wouldn't be a service the school automatically receives, The Academy will have to buy in their own specialist dance and music teachers.

Then the argument would probably be that therapeutic sessions should be paid for by the NHS budget and not out of the education budget.

Also Im not sure how it works in special schools, but in mainstream schools there is a massive drive to using LSAs (learning support assistants or teaching assistants) in as productive a way as possible, usually to support the more traditional 3 'R's kind of teaching.

So to me this is unfortunately more about cutbacks than anything else...

why did the school become an Academy in the first place?

Did anyone see the front page of the Guardian today ...

How the US and Britain unlock privacy on the internet....basically saying how the secret services from both countries have broken all the internet encryption systems so they can spy on everyone, and how therefore none of our banking systems are now foolproof.

I am not happy about this at all.......ok so I sort of thought something like this was bound to happen, but if it is so ultra top secret that no one knows about it....How on earth can it be regulated in any shape or form? What is to stop some supervillain from accessing this info and using it for their own personal gain, if there are no safeguard at all????

    Hi CS
Sorry, can't help you on that technical stuff.
But it's not due to start yet. Could be next weekend. Not sure.
Will let you know as soon as I know.
    It's on ITV here.

Hope you and Pika are keeping well :)

Sad that Murray lost at Quarter Final stage of the US Open but to be honest he just didn't seem to be cutting the mustard this time, as we say here. Back to the bad old moody Murray days. Guess it's hard to keep your motivation high all the time.

Nadal and Djokovic manage it though.;)

So pleased that Ade Edmondson won Celebrity Masterchef!
What a gifted guy he is! He's appearing still in TV programmes now and then.
He's about to begin a tour with his band.
And of course he was brilliant in The Young Ones, as were they all.
And he's married to Jennifer Saunders.

Really loved this series. Janet Street-Porter - very funny and it was so funny when, in spite of all her brash in your faceness, she was obviously chuffed to bits when they praised her cooking.;):D

I am well, still trying (or not!) to retire.
Just heard today that after my contract finishes the end of this month, I've got another job which will take me to the end of October at least, as well as all the other little bits of work which keep trickling in. I like this retirement business! ;):D

Has your new football season started?

Yes 3 weeks ago. We won 1 game then lose 2 with 4:2 and 4:3  our next game is tomorrow evening at 8pm .

Hey that is still better then last year when we had to wait 10 games until our 1 win.:D

My dad cant wait to get retired next year on 6.6.2014 and so do I because that means no more early taxi runs:D

Special schools still have to follow National Curriculum, as do Academies as far as I know. Swimming is a compulsory part of the national curriculum according to the government http://education.gov.uk/popularquestions/a005562/swimming "Swimming is a compulsory part of the current national curriculum for PE and will remain a compulsory part of the new curriculum when it is released."

Dancing wasn't really dancing, it's a music and movement therapy and wasn't just for Laura http://www.sherbornemovementuk.org/about-sherborne-developmental-movement.html

Her teacher has told me they will be re-arranging for this to start again, it's just not been sorted yet. As for the swimming, she said they can arrange for Laura to have use of the hydro pool once a week. It really is the only exercise she can do that doesn't involve her feet... doesn't hurt in other words.

I have also written to the Head to ask about the swimming, L's school does have to follow the National Curriculum (they have to do French, etc... they do all the alloted hours in project weeks to get around it, so they learn not just some French but about France, etc. so it covers several topics - geography, language, etc.). With regard to the cost, transport and use of the sports centre swimming pool is free for special needs, the teachers/TA's were the swimming teachers/therapists and transport is the school's. Time taken to/from applies to anything they do outside of school, such as the gardening project :)
