I'd be very wary at this stage of specifying details concerning the elements PJ may be interested in turning into film; JRRT's Son Christopher owns the rights to the Silmarillion, and so far, has publically stated that he has no intention of giving out rights for any movie based on it.

In a rare interview with Le Monde published recently, CT claims not to be impressed with PJ and the LoTR movie versions. He is also very protective of the works that he edits and maintains.

It's more likely PJ & Co will stick with material that is in the LoTR, and the Hobbit.

Three two hour films telling the story of The Hobbit plus the relevant material from the appendices.

Six hours compared to the nine plus hours of the LOTR trilogy.

    They have enough material.

The trilogy is actually confirmed. Peter Jackson posted on his Facebook page
So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

Filming "The Silmarillion" would be a heroic task. Some elements from it, such as the story of Beren and Luthien, or the Children of Hurin, might be possible, although the latter is pretty bleak.

    Fixed that for you. :)

It didn't need it :D So, I wonder how long it'll be before remakes of the first three movies are announced, with each one being split into 2 or 3 films??? Clearly they missed a trick there.

Agreed, between The Hobbit and the Appendices of Lord Of The Rings, there is easily enough material to span the gap between The Events of the Hobbit and the opening of LOTR(if thats his plan, essentially turning the series into one large film)

When will these three films be released? One a year, like TLotR?

Has Peter Jackson actually filmed "The Hobbit" or has he written his own three volume prequel to the Lord of the Rings? I love Tolkein's version of the Hobbit - with it's childish innocence, silly songs and goblins. None of that would survive a rewrite into the Lord of the Rings. The Ring is a throwaway, invisibility plot device in the Hobbit not the great, addictive harbinger of doom of the LOTR.

Considering part one is this year and part two next year, i'd say it stands to reason that part three will follow the year after.

I cannot wait for The Hobbit. I am so excited. :)

But... this third film announcement is worrying. I think there will be a lot to nitpick about in these movies.

I love PJ, he is the man, but with this, and the fact he jumped on the 3D bandwagon screams "cash in" to me.

I'm excited, but also ready for little disappointments here and there.

3D is only a Bandwagon to people who don't care for it,i personally cant wait to see these films in 48fps 3D

Im suspecting hes realised that their is a lot of stuff in the appendices that will allow them to complete Bilbo's story through to LOTR allowing them to bridge the two trilogies together into The Middle Earth Saga

I was talking to the guy in the odeon last week while waiting for DKR screen to open. We spoke about 3D. He claims that people are now starting to get fed up with it. More people asking for 2D since AA came out.

I've never cared for it cos i was born with a dodgy right eye and it just doesn't work for me. But most people i know complain that it gives them a sore head.

It's just a fad. But there are people that enjoy it like yourself that will keep the money coming in for them. For now at least.

Wow sorry, that was way off topic.

    Hobbits, dwarves, Gollum, yay!

The third film will be released in Summer 2014.

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/07/31/3419077/third-hobbit-movie-confirmed-for.html

Also, the following titles have been recently registered:
    The Desolation of Smaug

    The Battle of Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies

The Hobbit: Riddles in the Dark

    http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/the-hobbit/22176/possible-titles-for-the-hobbit-part-3-revealed

    http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2012/07/31/60231-exclusive-new-line-registers-hobbit-movie-titles/#more-60231

The Desolation of Smaug wouldn't really be suitable as a lot of the general public would have difficulty in pronouncing Smaug's name.*

    * Pronounced: Smowg, sm- ow-g.

Inspired by an old Norse form; smjúga.

I was thinking the opposite: that because the supplementary material is so sketchy, it will be harder to complain when Jackson makes things up. We can be fairly sure that if the warg had happened, it would be in the book, but the attack on Dol Guldur isn't described in anything like the same detail as the journey to Helms Deep.

I hope not. Drogo Baggins and the Tavern Maid! Whatever would the Sackville Bagginses think of that?
