Internet Help with Modem

I've got this modem:

http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/modem_DPC2100.html#~features

Can't for the life of me work out how to get it to wirelessly transmit the internet so I can pick it up on my laptop, or do I need a router (which I'm sure I've got (but it was years ago)).

Help needed :)

That modem can't provide any wireless functions.

You need a wireless router. Your best bet will be to contact your ISP (Virgin?) and see if they will provide a more up-to-date unit. These days it's common for the modem and a wireless router to be combined into a single unit.

Virgin do a all-in-one unit they call Superhub which combines modem and a wireless router. I think they cost £75 but you may be able to wangle one off VM.

Alternatively a decent wireless DSL cable router which plugs into your modem can be had for around £50, e.g.

Thanks for the replies. I'll contact Virgin on Monday and see if I can't get one off them (hell, they've had enough cash off me over the last decade).

If your contract is coming up for renewal or you are out of contract and on a rolling contract then your chances of getting a new router are very good, you hold the trump card.
