Quite. People think she's an opera singer, but in reality she's never sung an opera in her life.
Last time I saw her being interviewed, she was VERY particular to point out that she does not consider herself to be an opera singer... She said her voice is not quite mature enough and that she needed another couple of years or so...

And a whole helluva lot of coaching. She has nowhere near the technique to get through a staged opera performance.
She might make a half decent recording if she can spread the singing out over a couple of weeks or more
Fair enough, if it came across that way, apologies all round. But it certainly wasn't intentional, and I thought I was pretty explicit in saying that I specifically *wasn't* picking on her.
But I suppose you can never account for how different people will take different things
Hello Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls i have just finished watching Britain's got talent and this will be my next Reality TV show. Could i join this thread please?
Well, tonight's show leaves me hopeful that the worst aspects of last year's series have been left behind - no Titchmarsh, no Meat Loaf, no Little Lord LLewellyn- Bowen - and a distinct lack of screaming and whooping from the audience so far, although some screams did seem to be creeping in toward the end.
From the discussion, it seems that one of the contestants is to sing in the counter-tenor register! I'm not exactly thrilled - it's a bit of a 'Marmite' voice in that you love it or hate it and I'm in the latter camp.
Apart from Midge Ure and Cheryl Baker, I can't say that I'm familiar with the rest of the contestants, although Joceyln ? seemed up for the challenge!
We'll see!
Rolando was a delight as always, and I see that Katherine is already coming in for the usual criticisms despite the fact that I have never, not once, heard her claim to be an opera singer.
She's not a soprano either, which is why she didn't attempt the B at the end of 'Brindisi' - she's a mezzo-soprano. who describes herself as a 'classical singer' and seems to be making a very nice living at it!
At least they're all singers this year. I can't think why Alex James appeared last time. Ah yes.....the filthy lucre might have had something to do with it.

The voice type you are isn't just to do with range, weight and colour of voice comes in to things as well, probably more so than just range tbh. The vast majority of trained mezzos should be able to hit a B5, which is really not that high for a trained female classical singer. I'm just disappointed when she sings anything usually assigned to sopranos because she never nails the top note - she does the same with her later versions of Time to Say Goodbye. It's nothing to do with the fact she isn't a soprano. It's because her B5 would sound weak and unsupported and frankly she's copping out. But you're right, she's done very well and good luck to her I say.
the irony when Clare said she looks back and expects to see the other four from Steps there - Not when you walk out on them at the height of their popularity love !!!
Singing classical music may be about the voice but Opera demands much more. It demands acting in character while singing, usually in a foreign language - that's quite a juggling act for a beginner like the contestants on this show, no matter their experience or what genre they usually sing.
Darius came from behind to win last year because he, more than the others, exhibited that ability and he held his nerve in the final when it really mattered, and in the duet, although he'd never been in a group and had only sung a handful of duets in the West End, he matched his voice more closely to Rolando's
I'm tempted to watch this year (having given the first series a miss) because I'm a massive Erasure fan and want to see Andy Bell do well
Know nothing about opera, didn't intend to watch last year, but ended up watching during some channel hopping, and really enjoyed it, well worth giving it a go.
I think Claire Richards looks to be a good contender
Joe also hopefully. The 9pm show appeared to be live - anyone know for sure ??
Always thought Claire had a decent set of lungs on her, if you excuse the expression. Joe's voice is interesting, it's more musical theatre naturally so I'm wondering how his operatic voice will sound like.
I don't think the 9pm show was live but I could be wrong. It was intended to be an hour as well according to the official website.
i hope they'll get a little further away from the Pop Idol copycat-like programme, with a lot of wasted time on recaps, interviews etc. and spend more time on showing some of the training techniques, rather than going for melodramatic introductory VTs every week.
My other pet hate was the screaming audience during the actual singing. Let them do it at the end of each aria by all means, but screaming after the first note and at every trill or high note really got under my skin and spoiled the early stages of last year's show.
For the curious there's a sopranist countertenor at 1:24. It's an unearthly voice -- amazing and weird. And weird and amazing. And amazing and etc. It's hard to get over it...
This is from Ercole sul Termodonte, the newly-rediscovered Vivaldi opera, with a cast including Rolando. I know it's a bit of a vexed issue amongst those in the know (as they would claim), but I love this CD in my simple way and can't for the life of me see the problem with a 19th-century specialist (RV) singing Baroque. Especially when it's Hercules -- if ever a role needed brio.
Enjoy! (if possible -- I'm adding this for those in the know who may be sniffy. Eh, but for me the sheer energy of the thing overrides the need for sniff or judgement. S'glorious stuff!!)
PS really looking forward to tonight's show. Loved this last year. It's a great idea and such an amazing challenge to give to the singers.

Hee, though did you notice that the first thing Rolo did when he got on the stage on the intro prog was to squeal? Pleased he's come back to this thing despite the criticism from The Critics last year. It pokes something sharp in the eyes of those who want to keep all this for themselves... I don't mean you Airam. I mean the old trouts and farts of the opera-going world.

This is a countertenor (and a damn good one). If you don't want the intro, the aria starts at about 1:30 into the clip

Thank you, DFI.
Looking in the Radio times is says it's on for 6 episodes
cheers

I don't think she is fat at all. She is the way women should be IMO - a few curves.

I'm willing Midge, Andy & Jocelyn to do well- but what on earth has Andy done to his face?!
