Where can I get a multi region DVD player? Need ASAP help!

I have DVD box sets that are region 1 (from the US) and will not play on my PS3. I tried them on the other DVD players in my house, and they won't work on any of them except a small TV/DVD combi.

I am about to go over to ASDA, and have a look around some other shops near there for one, but how do I know which ones are multi region? I read that most modern DVD players are, but the ones I've had aren't.

Anyone here recently bought a DVD player from ASDA that was multi region? If so, what one?

I am only looking for a cheap one. I am only buying it to play my US DVD's because they won't work on my PS3 and so I can only watch them on my little TV.

Basically I just need some advice on what models are and what aren't!

The stores close in around an hour so I need to get there as soon as possible.

I think Richer Sounds sells them.

    EDIT - Perhaps Amazon too.

Do this on your exsisting DVD.

find the code on the bottom of the dvd player and type into google. When you type it in to google, write after how to turn in multi region or something around that line.

You should get a code of somesort that allows you to change it in about 3 seconds via your remote.

This means your DVD player will be region 0 and can therefore play ANY dvd worldwide.

Good luck, PM if you need more help.

I may not be of much help to you given that I am in a Region 1 country, but when I wanted to buy a multi-region DVD player to play DVD sets I imported from the UK, I asked advice and was told that the key is to avoid buying any of the standard "name-brand" machines -- that the super-cheap models in stores either have no region protection or poor region protection that is easy to get around. And sure enough, the cheap player I purchased plays Region 2 just fine.:) Now whether any of this applies to the DVD players sold in the UK -- I have no idea.

    Thank you both!

I just looked on the asda site and googled the brands and found one that can be hacked. Off to buy it.

    Cheerio!

^this, we had to buy one when my son got Lost dvds from USA, we just bought the cheapest from Curry's.
My son was able to put in the code to make it play (not EXACTLY sure what he did and I can't ask him as he's not here atm) but he just did a google search on how to change the region.

Surely it would be simpler, and cheaper, to just find out if there's a code for one of your existing players.

Richer Sounds have in the past, and I imagine that they still do. And an excellent store it is, too.

Also i'm pretty sure I was told the cheap as chips ones you buy in the supermarkets for 20/30 quid are multi region anyway.

Richer Sounds sell multi-region versions of name brand (eg Panasonic) DVD players - these either need a chip replacement or use of a special remote to get into the engineering menus.

The really cheap players tend to be multi-region out of the box as the manufacturer & seller don't give a damn about region coding.

But in the rare case they aren't just google "make, model number Multi-region" and you should get the - very simple - answer

Do you have a DVD drive on your computer? I use DVD43 on my PC- it's freeware, and it'll play anything. Not sure if they do it for Macs, but there must be an equivalent.

Not sure if this is true but I've been told if you (cough, cough) "crack" a UK marketed DVD player to make it multi-regional and it goes wrong it goes belly up ready for the dustbin.

    Anybody else heard this too?

    No, and no it doesn't.

Nice myth you're trying to propagate there though!

My little Bush DVD player in the bedroom is fully multiregion, bought it at Argos for £25 two or three years ago. The Liteon DVD/HDD Recorder in the livingroom is also multiregion.

Both just required the inputting of a handset hack found online. The Liteon still gets regularly used to play my Region 1 DVDs as my PS3 cannot be made multiregion for DVD playback unfortunately.

    Not true.

For any players that require a handset hack you are not breaking or hacking anything really, most budget players are multiregion anyway when they are made, they are just locked to whatever region they need to be for the particular market. Means the manufacturer can just make one player for worldwide distribution saving on costs. Hence the ease of unlocking.

It tends to be the big name brands that are hardware locked and can require a modification chip of some kind to be installed. In some cases this modification means a manufacturer will no longer offer support, but not always the case if the modification doesn't change the hardware or software. I have a Pioneer DVD Recorder that needed a chip installed. When the drive failed Pioneer replaced the drive and it was still multi region when I got it back. However, the drive failed again a couple of years later by which time I had the Liteon and Alba so now it gathers dust.

Pretty much any DVD player out there can be modified to multi region, just type the name and model number into google.
