  Breeds that look similar to the Irish terrier :
  
  Airedale
  Lakeland
  Welsh
  Kerry Blue
  
  However, none of these are deep red, nor are they smooth coated, so either it may have been an Irish that had been clipped very short, or possibly a cross. The Hungarian wirehaired Vizsla looks quite similar to what you describe as well.

  he`s a short, smooth coat, from a distance i thought he was a ridgeback puppy his face was a weeny bit wolfhound [in retrospect] too. i`ll have to hang about the rec early mornings and see can i catch his owner and ask:D
