    Funnily enough I found this:

    1980 appearances

    80 episodes - Len Fairclough
    73 episodes - Annie Walker
    70 episodes - Eddie Yeats
    69 episodes - Elsie Tanner
67 episodes - Fred Gee, Ivy Tilsley and Hilda Ogden
    63 episodes - Alf Roberts
    62 episodes - Mavis Riley
    61 episodes - Rita Fairclough
    60 episodes - Betty Turpin
59 episodes - Ken Barlow and Bert Tilsley
58 episodes - Stan Ogden and Bet Lynch
57 episodes - Gail Tilsley an Emily Bishop
    54 episodes - Dierdie Langton
    51 episodes - Mike Baldwin
    50 episodes - Brian Tilsley
    43 episodes - Albert Tatlcok
    41 episodes - Tracy Langton
37 episodes - Renee Roberts (Left in July 1980) and Arnold Swain
    35 episodes - Vera Duckworth
    31 episodes - Martin Cheveski
    29 episodes - Ida Clough
13 episodes - Audrey Potter (Recurring Role)
05 episodes - Ena Sharples (Left in April 1980)

Bare in mind Corrie was only on twice a week then so screened about 104 episodes a year so Len Fairclough's 80 is very impressive. Annie Walker appeared in 73 which suprised me, she must have been getting on a bit by then

Suprised Vera was so low but I guess this was before Jack came in properly. Can anyone tell me who the following charcters were:

    Ida Clough Factory worker '79 - '89; '95 - '98
Bert Tilsley (Brain's bother?) Nope, father. The actor died in '83
Renne Roberts (I'm asuming she was Alf's wife) Correct
Martin Cheveski Stayed with Granny Elsie

I have to say Corrie must have been brilliant back then, so many legends on the show at the same time

Where did you find this list, by the way?

Oh, and with less than 4 weeks till the big day, a count update would be nice. ;)

    Please :)

I would love someone to do a character count for every year, they did it in that 40th Anniversary book which was interesting but sadly it doesn't to be in the 50th book, but a lot of research would have to go into this sort of project :o

I'm proud to say I did it myself! There's a website for Corriepedia which is like the ultimate site for any Corrie fan, it has detailed character proflies and a page for each episode EVER which features plot, credits and ratings.

So I got the 1980 count by scrolling through the 1980 episodes and looking at the cast list, I'm not 100% sure on accuracy as many episodes featured the same characters in the same credit order, but I reckon it's about 99.9% correct

I might have to check that site out ;)

So, when you 'found' the list did you not also find pages for the characters you were asking about?

I'd imagine 99.9% is a tad optimistic btw - it would imply less than half-a-dozen errors across the whole of a year like 1980. I do however have every faith that they keep it as accurate as they can and will always strive for improvement.

Now, is this the site you were referring to, perchance? ;)

One explanation for Annie Walker being on screen so much despite her advancing age is that she would've appeared behind the bar in the Rovers, rather than having any real storylines wouldn't she?

Quite a few of the leads were getting on in years by then (of course Doris Speed claimed to be only 66 in 1980!). It wasn't like now - every episode featured about 2/3s of the cast and whenever Annie wasn't around her absence would be explained.

We're trying to get a complete list at Corriepedia but the 1990s cast lists are proving to be the hardest to get hold of (would you believe!)

Thanks for the update, David. :)

A Platt//McIntyre/Tisley-dominated year then. Also, Fiz has been in waaaay too many episodes for my liking.

Sorry if this has been asked before but - if a character appears in both episodes (on a Monday or Friday), does this count as one or two?

I am guessing 2 as they are counted at seperate episodes only a guess though

No surprises in the top 10 really, but mirroring what others have said Fiz is way too high for someone who should be on par with other factory workers. Seems obvious that both Crowther/Collinson are big fans of the Platts giving them huge storylines, but I reckon they'll get a break now. Pleasing to see 2 of the longest serving (Gail & Audrey) right at the top there, especially considering other long servers like Betty, Rita are falling down the list. Also nice to see Carla fairly high up.

    Thanks for that list-really interesting!

Doesn't seem like Gail/Audrey/David are involved in the tram crash much, which could easily send Nick Tilsey to the top of the list by the end of the year-shocking thought:eek:

    73 Tony Gordon (8)
    74 Jim McDonald (7)
    75 Jackie Dobbs (5)
    76 Ted Page (4)

Nick's had a busy year, with storylines with Gail, Carla, Natasha and Leanne so him taking the top spot isn't all that surprising. Sally is quite high considering her six-month absence.

    Thanks for the update, David.

What a depressing top 2. I hope they'll both be in a lot less episodes in 2011.

Fiz, Audrey and Sophie are the big shocks for me there. I didn't realise any of them had made that many appearences! Can't believe Nick has been involved in four big storylines this year aswell. Looks like things will start to calm down for most of the Platts, but characters like Steve, Becky, Leanne, Peter look likely to be at the top of that list this time next year. Hopefully not with Tracy joining them.

Thanks once again for all your hard work, which makes for really interesting reading:)

I've got a feeling Tracy will be near the top of the list this time next year

    Thanks for doing that David!
Nick and Fiz have been on our screens on average over three times a week
Surely that needs putting right next year...?

And I'd totally forgotten about Sally's absence. Nearly 100 episodes in only half a year - wow!

Yes, re-reading this thread start to finish I was shocked to see Sally appearing in so few at the start of the year, before realising she was on leave, silly me!
Glad to see Carla has been in a fair few episodes, hope we see a lot more of her in 2011, maybe even some of her family too, and maybe alongside Peter more often? ;)

Edit: By the way, thanks so much for this thread, it's really interesting :)

Fiz had a major storyline + factory scenes which explains her rating higher than John Stape, who only really appeared when his storyline was going on. Most of the totals are an increase on last year as the episodes have had bigger casts since Phil Collinson took over.
