why does my humax have a hissey hit?

hi i supose most people have the dreaded feeling when they see the ---- icons in there led display instead of the time.
is this caused i think by ...setting a program to record in the epg then the tv station changing the program to something else ? ie last nights the bill changed to football ? i programed the epg 3 days before this ?
this happens to me a couple of times a month and not allways because of above any idea's ????
