Before exploding? The hairspray was right outside the door. Also, how did they manage to retrieve a cigarette butt in a large house that had burst into flames and pass it off as what caused the fire?
How did Alfie manage to go upstairs and get Kat and make it back to the front door with the fire already outside the bedroom when she was on the phone? The stairs are near the living room (the start of the fire) and and the front door, so if Peter and Johnny said the flames were too much then how did Alfie do it?

Because fire investigators train for years to recognise burn patterns and trace a fire back to its point of origin - plus they have lots of scientific equipment that can analyse the ashes to detect substances that may have cause the fire.

He was more motivated. He knew that if he didn't save her they'd have to sack Jessie Wallace and the writers would have to change the storyline to manslaughter/murder. He just didn't want to put anyone through that hassle.
Well at least Alfie won't be charged with murder, manslaughter or attempted murder. It's abundantly clear that he didn't mean to harm anyone, thought the house was empty and put his life on the line to save Kat, though no doubt most people will treat him like dirt when they find out the truth. I remember the Slaters hated him when the truth about his "affair" with Little Mo came out, but at least he acknowledged in the pub that he was wrong to string Roxy along and jilt her if I remember rightly.

She was upstairs with the door shut.
If there's anything that can beat off fire and smoke, it's a wooden bedroom door in a council house.
As for the fire they can spread quickly.
