Although, I don't think that Scotland is really that more known than anywhere else, unless you are talking about the USA, where some people love to either be Irish or Scottish....
Scotland has a very strong identity, or "brand" if you will, that's recognised all over the world. It's difficult to readily think of an English equivalent of bagpipes, tartan or Nessie.
I think the whole Scotland thing took off when Sean Connery became Bond. Foreigners were interested in his accent and through that they found out about kilts, shortbread, scotch, haggis, golf and flings.

Mainly because it is attached to England.
i still miss england though sometimes.
