Good on him. DM is disgusting with their made up stories, and Clooney does have a very good point, bringing up these false religious accusations and gossip they are creating a very dangerous and troubling platform.

What chance the Daily Fail reports this?

The DM are basically trying to create a "war" they can report on.

By telling lies they believe they can turn people against other people, then print the outcome gleefully.

Good on him for sticking it to them. They've picked on the wrong man this time because he's considerably smarter than the Mail's usual 'sidebar of shame' fodder.

Brilliant response by George, loved his line about them sitting at computers inventing stories. Good on him, the DM totally asked for that and he's correct, it is negligent & dangerous printing such untrue guff.

I've just seen this article - presuming its correct their apology seems to be much more low key than the original story as I can't find it even buried on the DMs online site

    http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/07/09/george-clooney-receives-rare-apology-from-daily-mail-star-claimed-fabricated-incited-violence-_n_5570154.html?utm_hp_ref=uk-news

They are still running that 20(?) year old story on Angelina Jolie though with nothing in the title to suggest it's anything but current!

George Clooney receives apology from Mail, and they didn't mention it on Daily Mail Online!

Doing a search for the original story the link gets this now....
The page you have requested does not exist or is no longer available

    Part of the Mail apology...
The MailOnline story was not a fabrication but supplied in good faith by a reputable and trusted freelance journalist....

We have removed the article from our website and will be contacting Mr Clooney’s representatives to discuss giving him the opportunity to set the record straight.”

If it's a reputable & trusted freelance journalist why aren't the Mail defending that person before withdrawing the article? Could it be it's all about money for the paper rather than the truth?

He must have some clout to get them to apologise...don't recall them ever saying sorry for any of their other lies!

Someone mentioned elsewhere, that this letter was worded in such a way that he may have been planning on suing the DM. The religious drivel they did write could be grounds for a lot.

That's true - something must have scared them to make them say sorry for once!

Probably that Clooney actually could have had a good case against them in court if it got that far. Also, the fact that Clooney is absolutely loaded.

The Mail Online have finally printed a retraction.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/article-2686658/George-Clooney-A-correction-apology.html

Can't say that I am impressed by it. It's small and unnoticeable, half way down the page. No chance of commenting. Not worded in a genuinely apologetic way to my mind either.

"On Monday MailOnline carried an article which alleged that the mother of George Clooney’s fiancée Amal Alamuddin would prefer her daughter to be married to a member of the Druze religious group.
Yesterday Mr Clooney said the story was 'completely fabricated' and exploited 'religious differences where none exist.'
In a statement MailOnline said: 'The story was not a fabrication but supplied in good faith by a reputable and trusted freelance journalist.
'She based her story on conversations with a long standing contact who has strong connections with senior members of the Lebanese community in the UK and the Druze in Beirut.
'We only became aware of Mr Clooney’s concerns this morning and have launched a full investigation.
'However, we accept Mr Clooney’s assurance that the story is inaccurate and we apologise to him, Miss Amal Alamuddin and her mother, Baria, for any distress caused.
'We have removed the article from our website and will be contacting Mr Clooney’s representatives to discuss giving him the opportunity to set the record straight.'"

I find the BIB particularly patronising and arrogant!

They're not accepting comments under their 'apology' because they'll know what kind of reactions they'll get. That's what the trashy Daily Mail gets for trying to be 'clever'.

Yet they accepted comments on the original article. Hmmm...

"Members of the community" - who's that then? That could be anyone  They could be nothing whatsoever to do with Clooney and his family. The Daily Mail should get off its high horse and apologise properly. They lied, plain and simple.

The apology is a joke. What do the Lebanese community in UK and the Druze in Beirut have to do with it? She's not Druze apparently and hasn't been on Beirut in months. The apology just in too many words says, that they had no source who had even talked with Amal's mother, or anyone close to her. They just wanted to write a scandalous story, and for once it was about someone who might have enough clout to get DM in serious chit.

    Their 'apologies' are always jokes.

I'm surprised they've actually called this one an 'apology'. Usually they call it a 'correction' or a 'clarification'.

Could his agents have said none of their stars would give interviews to the paper or even film studios threatened not to advertise in the paper?

    Mind you this bit....
'We have removed the article from our website and will be contacting Mr Clooney’s representatives to discuss giving him the opportunity to set the record straight.'"

Means they get a George Clooney exclusive?

Vile. And pathetic. That paper symbolises all that is petty and mean-spirited and depressing about this country at the moment.
