For me, it's a South Bank special on Jimi Hendrix from late 1989.
Great question. Simple answer first. The Dave Allen show from January 1990 when he said the f word and annoyed a lot of people. Great gag though.
Another aspect to the question is What is the most valuable archive recording I have in my collection? Well, it is from December 2011. It is a tribute programme for the recently deceased national treasure, Sir (Uncle) Jimmy Savile , in the days when he was still a great guy, about ten months before he turned out to be a little more fond of the guys and gals than he should have been.
I'll not say any more, but if you get a chance to see it, it is truly breathtaking. I an not sure, but I think that it may be so incendiary that it might not even appear on YouTube, Vimeo or a video source from Russia, it's so brazen.
Not sure if I've still got it, but the first thing I recorded was an episode of Top of the Pops from 1982 which had Billie Jean by Michael Jackson at No. 1. I kept rewinding and playing the video over and over again, until I was sick of the song but it was a novelty to do that at the time!
What a great question! I've got a Late Late Breakfast Show from 1984, and a Kenny Everett Show from 1981.
Wow, you had a video recorder in 1981, we didn't even have a phone! Our school had one, it was about the size of a suitcase and took two pupils to carry it.

Ha ha that reminds me of THE television trolley which would have to be wheeled around the primary school and we'd watch episodes of " how we used to live" circa the 80's
We have a home video from 1981 with lots of good stuff on the back of it like highlights of World Cup 82, The Sullivans, Parkinson, countless adverts and kids programmes like Get up & Go and Gammon & Spinach.
I remember my parents recording the smokey and the bandit films and putting the tapes in those cases that looked like leather bound books lol!!
I used to tape saturday morning tv ....going live. We were really posh ours had a remote control albeit it was wired but you could sit on the setee and rw and ff till the cows came home!!:D
I have some episodes of Corrie from the 80's that were on cassettes given to me along with whatever programme was on before and after, as whoever recorded them didn't seem bothered about filling the whole tape up with ITV prime time programmes!
Still have them, but no VCR sadly. A shame, as I'd like to transfer some old recordings I have to DVD or on to my hard drive for archiving.
1983 recordings of Hill Street Blues on Phillips 2000 double sided tape. Also an illegal copy of Rambo [First Blood], and Kelly's Heroes on the same format. Both are still in my garage with all of my VHS copies of Live Aid. I had progressed to VHS by then and remember piles of blank tapes next to the TV on the day

Yeah we had one around that time too. My mum used to record the Sullivans.

Although they are from repeats which aired in 1987, rather than the original showings in 1971.
