DSFE 63 - STOP! Lillehammer time

God kveld Europa, and welcome to Lillehammer, host city of the Winter Olympic Games in 1994, the Winter Youth Olympics next year, & most importantly, the 63rd DS Fantasy Eurovision contest, the 4th DSFE to be held here in Norway.

So, the conventional rules are normal, so:
Songs must be less than 5 minutes long.
Songs must have been released after 2000.
Artists must be from their country or their microstate's parent country. For ancestry, parents or grandparents ONLY will be accepted. Any more distant ancestry will not be accepted.
Songs must not have appeared in the UK top 40.
Songs must not have been entered into DSFE before (the wiki is your friend with this).
Eurovision & NF artists are fine, but their Eurovision/NF songs are not.
You must vote in any QF/SF/final you're in, or your song will be disqualified.
Finally, you must try not to get banned from the forum during the contest, as doing so will result in disqualification ;)

Now for the country rules:
This contest is entirely random. Everyone who signs up will receive 2 countries at random. One of these will be a good country, from this pot:
Pot 1, the good ones:
1 Sweden
2 Norway
3 Netherlands
4 Germany
5 Jersey (England 2)
6 England
7 Finland
8 Denmark
9 Italy
10 France
11 Switzerland
12 Monaco (France 2)
13 Isle of Man (Wales 2)
14 Hungary
15 Faroe Islands (Denmark 2)
16 Iceland
17 Gotland (Sweden 2)
18 Svalbard (Norway 2)
19 Scotland
20 Ireland
21 Spain
22 San Marino (Italy 2)
23 Liechtenstein (Germany 2)
24 Uzbekistan (Russia 2)
25 Israel
26 Aland Islands (Finland 2)
27 Northern Ireland
28 Wales
29 Poland
30 Romania
31 Guernsey (France 2)
32 Luxembourg (Netherlands 2)
33 Russia
34 Shetland Islands (Scotland 2)
35 Andorra (Spain 2)
36 Australia

The other one will be a bad country, from this selection:
Pot 2, the bad ones:
1 Austria
2 Western Asia (Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Jordan)
3 Greece
4 Ukraine
5 Czech Republic
6 Slovakia
7 Malta
8 Portugal
9 Lebanon
10 Macedonia
11 Estonia
12 Cyprus
13 Latvia
14 Albania
15 Armenia
16 Wallonia (Belgium 1)
17 Bulgaria
18 Azerbaijan
19 Slovenia
20 Turkey
21 Flanders (Belgium 2)
22 Kazakhstan
23 Croatia
24 Belarus
25 Morocco
26 Lithuania
27 Moldova
28 Algeria
29 Bosnia & Herzegovina
30 Serbia
31 Georgia
32 Montenegro
33 Kosovo (Albania or Serbia 2)
34 Tunisia
35 Transnistria (Ukraine 2)
36 Azores (Portugal 2)
You'd best hope your luck's in when I do the draw ;)

The format will be conventional, & precise numbers will depend on how many signups I get. But I can confirm there will be 4 QFs, then 2 SFs, then the final. If I get 36, each QF will have 18 countries, & 10 will go through. Then each SF will have 20, & 13 will go through for a 26 song final. Just for you Terry ;)

As for a timeline, the signups will close on Saturday, so I can do the draw on Sunday, which is best for me. I'll do up a timeline for the rest of the contest from then.

So that's it for explanation, time to OPEN DSFE 63! Signups close on SATURDAY AT 6PM with the draw to follow on Sunday.

Finally, the last contest was great, but 21 pages is a bit :(. So I want your ideas on getting conversation going when all players remain intact. My target for this is 50 pages. Beth had an idea last night for other players to do quizzes/games to help with this. As long as they're related to DSFE, I think that's a good idea but I'm open to any & all suggestions.

So all that's left to say now is lykke til to all of you, & I hope you enjoy this contest. And remember...you can't touch this :)

Sent you a PM, yoshi. :)

Everyone (I hope) has had an entry which they had high hopes for when they entered it only for it to be immediately eliminated. Sometimes the mistake is realised too late but, at other times, you have to wonder 'why?!' So my question is...

Which of your DSFE entries which fell at the first hurdle is your favourite?

My has to be from way back in Gyumri when I entered Silencio by David Bisbal for Spain. I still love it even now and felt it should have got further. Maybe it wasn't the right time for light rock? :D

Hmm, I think it has to be between:

Emma [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZLadL9ZCx0] One of my fav songs of hers.

    and

Natalya Podolskaya [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkqnwKJhGu0] Seriously thought this song had an epic quality to it.

I was actually going to enter that when I had Spain last, and then I saw you already entered it I was like . It is really good.

I liked all of the songs I've sent in so it's difficult to pick a favourite QF exit song, but these were a few I thought would do really well but crashed:

And this is one I always will love even though it was cruelly hated by everyone

To be fair, most of my QF exiters probably deserved to go. But I thought this'd do slightly better, especially being Montenegro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLotWGrAS1w
And these, the first 2 entries I ever put in, at least one of these should've got through:

Bisbal and his bizarre air guitar were amazing, I still have Silencio on a CD somewhere! :D I really liked Miki Sekulovski's song as well Mika, I don't know how that didn't even get through a round.

Had a look through the Wiki and here are my other favourite non-qualifiers from you all. :)

Julia - Liga! I remember that at the time; I can't believe that didn't get through!

I think Balkan sounds tend to be rejected. Anything with an ethnic feel tends to be rejected which is a shame. I try and steer clear now but often the alternatives do little better.

I had a disaster in the Bordeaux contest and really thought I'd do better. I followed it up with a couple of reasonable results, though, so can't complain too much! :D

Ah the DSFE fado craze, lasted exactly one contest! :D

Anything uptempo and catchy with a few Balkan/eastern instruments thrown in I usually love, Montenegro in the last contest was exactly my sort of song. Me and Mies rejected Maraaya in Almaty to send this epic, admittedly that decision is looking more and more questionable now Maraaya's going to end up top 10 in Vienna, but sometimes you've got to stand up for what you believe in. :p

Probably looking back the two of mine that I'm most surprised didn't even get through a round are these two, preferred this Najoua Belyzel song to the one that reached the final in the last contest tbh.

This for Poland. Still think it's so catchy <3

Not as robbed as this though. Poor AcerBen :( I think it was ahead of its time.

It's difficult for me to name one song that went out at the first hurdle that I think should have made it further. For me whilst I like them all, I can see in some way why they fell at the first hurdle.

I guess the two Giusy Ferreri songs I entered would be the ones that stand out the most. Plenty of entries that went out in the Semi-Final stage would fit that bill though.

5 songs of mine that didn't qualify that should've done :p

    5. Madrid - Spain: Natalia - Besa Mi Piel - Back in the days of auto-qualification and the doomed songs that came with it, I still love this. :p (Remember this was back in 2011 so the video wasn't so much of an issue)

    4. Lund - France: Indila - Love Story - Any song that wins a QF should be in the final so screw you all for this certain voting collapse. At least I can now say I'm a member of this victims club with Terry & MissM.

    3. Dublin 2 - Romania: Claudia Pavel - Beautiful Lies - No video but always loved this song and thought it had a great Eurovision sound so was surprised when it didn't qualify.

    2. The Hague - Hungary: Linda Kiraly - Runaway - My biggest voting collapse ever, 175 points/2nd place in the QF to a pityful 64 points/13th in the SF and just missing out on qualifying (damn 24 person finals!!). If this had a video I think it would've done extremely well and I had high hopes for it.

    1. Gothenburg/Edinburgh - Jersey: Moya - Making Me Fall - I've always been a fan of this song and when I got England for the first time in over a year I was happy that I could send it ... it got 88 points in its Semi Final and still didn't qualify lol... Ridiculous!!

I was so sure that my entry into this club would have scraped the QF and fallen at the SF, I know how fickle this place is about well-known songs.

As a relative newbie, has there ever been a DSFE variant for songs that are pre-2000?

Never been one. To be honest not sure whether it would be successful anyway. Would be quite difficult to find songs that pre-date 2000 for some countries. And when you consider how poor some countries music scenes are nowadays, I dread to think what they would be like from before 2000. :D

In the General Eurovision Thread, they have their own fantasy contest during the "off-season", where you can enter any song you want. So those sort of songs can be entered there.
