Is it not illegal to keep a monkey as a pet in the UK now?

I think it's illegal to keep monkeys in the UK.

It used to be very easy to get pet monkeys. Sailors and side show stalls often had them with them.

In the 70's you used to see a lot of monkeys working in seaside towns dressed up in funny tiny outfits.

You are hardly likely to get one these days as monkeys are not good as pets.

Get a pussy or a dog instead.

A monkey would be cool to have, so long as he learned how to put the kettle on!

By the way, any monkey would have done and I've had plenty of goldfishes.

It does seem that there is still a monkey trade going in the UK.

My uncle had two of those monkeys in the 70's.

They were called Samson and Delilah, and he was apparently nasty to them :(

Their social creatures i'm no expert but according to the monkey world programme its cruel to keep one on its own as they become mentally unstable.

I'd keep a couple and give them the best habitat possible :).

As a young girl all I ever wanted was a monkey as a pet, I pleaded and pleaded. I loved them. I knew I could care for one <in my mind> better than I saw them looked after in any Zoo. I'd let it run riot around the house :D an do a big massive shed up in the garden for it as a play pen! :D I found them gorgeous creatures...

Then I grew up and realised how cruel and selfish of me that would have been...

I also find it sick and appaling how many creatures it is legal to keep in the USA in cages in their back garden as 'pets', just sat there engaged forever. Then they scream and report horror tales when one manages to escape and kill X amount of the neighbourhood. :( Sad.
