A Cat Query Regarding Drinking Water

My friend in the States recently rescued a 5 week old kitten (her dogs found her) and they have taken her in and looking after her
she is doing really well and is adorable. One thing my friend says is that with her water bowl she puts her paw in and starts splashing it (Just like a cat when they been to the loo or have food they dont like) !!
Any ideas, She asked me and I couldnt think of anything.

The cat is clearing the debris from the top of the water (dust etc) before drinking.

My cat won't touch tap water (makes me wonder what's in it!!!!).

Instead we fill her water bowl with rain water from the garden butt. She drinks that.

Many cats won't drink anything but running water. A neighbour has to run the tap and her cat drinks from it as it's running.

My cat's the same. I've got one of those pet water fountain things. (She'll drink from a running tap too).

Mine did for ages. And she used to tip her water bowl over.

A kind DS cat owner suggested using a different water bowl with a lower rim. It worked.

I also think cats like to see the water move, so it might be worth her buying a cat drinking fountain. They adore running water.

    :)

Also I suppose its where my friend lives, the water may have a smell to it.
My dear puss used to jump up on the work surface and stand near the tap for me to turn it on for her,she did that even on the day she died.:(:(

My cat used to wait outside the bathroom door when you were in the shower, then nip in and drink the water left behind!

PMSL (Oh is that a bit of a pun):D My cat as well as drinking out of the tap used to follow me into the bathroom and wait until I'd pull the chain and she would prop herself up and look down the bowl! Aww bless her:(

I have some photos of a past cat of mine doing that too. My grown cat likes to drink from tall things, flower vases etc, she has her own. One of those Paul Masson carafe wine bottles works for some, though you're gonna have to find someone with a strong stomach to empty it for you. I think I might prefer the toilet.

My cat does that as well

My cat paws her water bowl too, she much prefers drinking out of the running cold tap in the bathroom though.

My cat will drink rain water from a puddle but she won't touch tap water.

She loves milk. I always have milky cats.

Cats need very little water, you will never see a cat lapping-up water like dogs do, even when the weather is really hot. In fact, they need so little water that if they are fed tinned cat food it's possible for them to get nearly all their necessary water from their food!

Cats shouldn't be given milk, it's too rich for them. Yes, of course they will like it, they like a certain brand of cat food, too, because it's got a very high salt content, but, once again, it's not good for them.

Totally agree with you! When my cat was very ill the vet said straight away feed her on *wet food* she was on biccies (cos she did need to lose weight at some time) They get 70% of their water content out of wet food! Oh by the way giving them Tuna as a treat is very, very high in salt content.!
Its very hard, cos my cats had to go on a diet cos they were gettng abit porky.....but then something happens and you have to put one of them back on wet food! :( Does me head in really.:(

I was told by a vet that if you saw your cat drinking regularly there is usually something wrong with them. With my first cat we had never seen him drinking, then he started drinking from running taps, out of glasses, puddles etc Later we found out after taking him to the vets he had kidney failure.

I've had my new cat over 3 years and I haven't seen him drink once.

Oh yes! I agree with that, its all according to what your puss is eating,If they are eating wet food and drinking then I'd worry (I have lost two cats through KD) What I'm querying is *strange behaviour regarding water* with a little kitten that is only about 3 months old.

My cat drinks water out of a pint glass - not sure why, maybe she just likes to see the water.

My bathroom tap gets left on a slow run for the cat, when I'm out. It's the only water in the house he'll drink. He wont drink from a bowl.. He drinks puddle water too.

My cats drink tap water from a bowl fairly regularly. One of then has been suffering from cystitis and has been put on a prescription (dry food) diet so her water drinking has increased.

One of them also likes to drink from the bathroom tap and also bath water (as long as it doesn't contain bubble bath .. lol )

Lol. My cat drinks water from a vase filled with a bamboo type plant. He has a fresh water bowl but never touches it. Think he likes the bamboo flavour. Weird cat :P
