Given that The Sun's TV advert for its serialisation of the biography was shown immediately after BGT finished last night, and Cowell himself tweeted that he wasn't looking forward to the "unauthorised" book in turn not long after that, it's pretty certain this is exactly what's happened.

He is quoted saying it was genuine love. That means it was something deeper. I agree, the term affair is some media's angle on it.
He doesn't need to fool all of us all of the time.
