What would be the point? What would I gain by doing so? Do you mean just ordinary wet fish, or frozen stuff, or smoked salmon or kippers? I might consider buying the last two online, but otherwise I doubt if I'd be interested.

Oh sorry when I meant fish I didn't mean the eating kind I meant fish that you keep in a tank or a pond e.g. Goldfish.
May I point out that when I replied to this thread it was in the Advice forum, and the opening post just said something like, "Would you buy fish online?" However, it's undergone some editing since then!
i wouldnt, i like to see the fish im buying before i hand over any money, plus it costs a fortune for the delivery and i would be worried sick about how they are surviving until i got them.
Not really, that's how they are delivered to pet shops anyway, so the only difference I guess is it's direct to your door.
Yep. At the pet shop I work in, we tend to get two or three boxes full come down from London to us down on the South Coast. We also get about three boxes every other week flying in from Singapore and the majority do fine after their quarantine period.
I bought some Angelfish from a private breeder via eBay, £6 for 3 and an extra £2 for guaranteed next day delivery (it was at the time f the postal strikes, so I didn't want to risk it. And even then, £8 for 3 Angels is a bargain.
4'ish months on and all 3 are still alive and kicking and doing fine.
The problem I have buying from actual fish stockists, via their websites is the postage is usually so high and the fish are still the same price as in the local fish shops so it makes it pointless buying online when you can pop in the car and visit a fish shop and see the fish before you buy them.

It depends on the supplier. If they are reputable then there is no real harm. I've been to one place that has sent tropical fish to oil rigs to be kept over the cousr of 48 hours.
Basically a lot of tropical fish are kept in bags and transported in polystrene box from across the world. If they have a good survival rate that way, then fish in a bag with oxygen added and placed in a polystrene box to retain heat will stand a good chance of survival over the course of a day.
As for fish quality then it's in the suppliers best intrest to send quality fish as it boost their reputation, if they have a good one to start with.
As long as you buy them from a reliable source there shouldnt be any problem with buying fish online. With some more unusual or specialist species, a shop may not be able to completly cater for them correctly before they are sold or picked up, and they may be delivered to the shop in the same way they would be to your door, so it may even be preferable.

I wouldn't buy goldfish either, though.

Well according this site http://www.wildwoods.co.uk/terms.html#shipping they deliver them polythene bags and then put them into polystyrene fish box e.g. one of these http://www.packagingandmuchmore.co.uk/images/Polystyrene%20fish%20boxes.JPG,put them into a van to there destination.
Wow, that's rather suprising they can do that

I have had absolutely no problems, deliveries always arrive when the supplier say they will and up until now all fish have arrived healthy.
Only thing that puts me off doing it more often is the postage costs.
As long as nobody takes a dump in it the fish should be ok
it's no different really some obviously do die in transit thoe .
