What causes heterosexuality?

Someone came up with the term "Compulsory heterosexuality".

I don't see why just because you are born male you should be attracted to a female and vice versa.

It didn't happen to me and I can't imagine what it would be like being sexually attracted to the opposite sex.

It seems quite a feat to get someone to be attracted to some one who is other in some ways as opposed to being attracted to what you know.

That doesn't explain why women find men attractive.

It is ironic because I am sure if this thread was entitled "what causes homosexuality" people would have responded by now with all manner of theories about distant fathers, over protective mothers and excessive female hormones etc.

No one knows what 'causes' heterosexuality any more than they know what 'causes' homosexuality. Some people are straight, some people are gay. Why is it even an issue in 2012 and why does it even need to be discussed in the first place?

Heterosexuality isn't compulsory, so whoever came up with that term has obviously got some sort of agenda.

Why would it concern you that some made up term does not apply to you? It's like saying you'd be bothered because someone said you ought to be a plintery blomberist.

I'm guessing it's because the OP is one of those "Ooooh, everyone look at me. I'm gay." guys. They just have to be the centre of attention darling.

As for the OP's question, I refer him to my learned friend -

    In gender studies.

People rear children with role expectations.

Right OK. I think you're just spoiling for an argument tbh. Women find men attractive as men are fit, same as my previous. Some people even like both.

What causes a person to like hip hop instead of trance. Just the way our brains are programmed. We all like different things.

Sorry to state the obvious, but genetics? It's in built into (most) people to want to have it away with the opposite sex so that their DNA gets passed on to the next generation. It's the same kind deal with breathing, it's just hardwired in there.

The notion of compulsory heterosexuality concerns how sexuality is constructed by society and that people have reared children with gender role expectations.

I started a thread elsewhere entitled "Gay children". People objected to the term "gay children" because they said A child couldn't know it was gay.

However if you watch "You've been framed you will see videos of people making girl and boy toddlers hold hand and kiss.

It is seen totally acceptable to get very young children to role play heterosexual roles but imagine getting to 5 year old boys to kiss. That would be seen as perverted.

So children don't get an opportunity to seriously explore homosexual issues and roles in the way enforced heterosexual roles are promoted.

All in all heterosexuality has been taken for granted and homosexuality has been pathologised and excessively studied as mysterious.

    Heterosexual genes?

Some people think all sexuality is socially created with only dispositions existing.

I have considered the notion of omnisexuality in which we have the capability of being attracted to anything but censor our urges in line with socialisation.

Yes I was about to say the same. I think it's fascinating that the hardwiring seems to be reversed in around 10% of the population though.

Of course the obvious reason for heterosexuality is the fact that without help from science, it is the only way to preserve the species.

What causes a person to like hip hop instead of trance. Just the way our brains are programmed. We all like different things.

That is true to an extent. Different likes and dislikes can be considered part of differing brain and perceptual mechanisms.

However that hasn't stopped theorists wildly speculating about why people are homosexual in thousands of studies and paper. And this is because it is seen as an abberation and not usefull because it doesn't lead to procreation. Including in evolution theories where people are supposed to be maximising their reproductive fitness at all costs.

However it is not straight forward to explain how someone can be attracted to the other genders differing body. Even if it is brain mechanisms or genes you still need a causal explanation. (Not some vague pseudo theory)

I notice though that straight people squirm under the same spotlight that homosexuals have been subjected to for years.

According to National Geographic, enough testosterone makes the brain masculine in the womb. The opposite for men who are homosexuals.
