currently getting over my dose of flu, had it all over xmas and have been bed bound for most of the week. It's been a while since I've had proper flu but this one has been really nasty. Currently not able to talk as I've lost my voice through hacking.

I thought I was losing my voice at one point, but not quite. I have however badly strained all my side muscles, and because my cough is still hanging round, they're still really painful.

Thanks. It's annoying because it didn't hurt at all whilst I had the flu, but now it's gone, the pains have kicked in. And I keep waking up and my cough seems to have gone, but then as the day goes on, it seems to get worse again, so the muscles aren't getting a rest. It's rather annoying!

I was saying to the doctor when I took my son there that he goes downhill during the evening/night. He can be almost normal in the day so I wait until later on to give him medicine. The doc said temperatures do go up in the evening/night more. Although she didn't go into detail why.

Poor lad...bet he hates it. Hope he gets well soon and is up and running about driving you crazy.

Again with all the doctors on DS telling us what we can and can't do when you have flu. I have just had flu, and yet managed to come on the computer, I even managed to get myself to the doctors, where they diagnosed me with flu, and a bacterial infection as well. Yes, I was knackered, and felt like crap, but it is possible to get out of bed.

Well imo you may have had some sort of flu like illness but certainly not the real deal if you can go out and about and no I'm not a doctor but my brother-in-law is a consultant specialising in infectious diseases and he always says that people underestimate how nasty real flu can be whilst overestimating the fact that they might have it .

Have to say though its a bit daft to go to the docs if you suspected you had it, it can kill the more vunerable members of society so the last thing to be doing is going to a surgery.

    A) She was diagnosed by her Doctor and you say his wrong because of your bil:rolleyes: This forum is filled with people who seem to 'know' more than the doctors who saw and diagnosed the patient,

    B) I (as I have stated in previous threads could with difficulty) go to my Doctor (after being advised to come in and was diagnosed with flu and pneumonia and subsequently hospitilised where the did blood tests to isolate the virus causing the flu - so I suppose now hospitals and doctores are wrong  Loads of DS forumers should patent their 'can't get out of bed test' then we wouldn't need doctors

    C) Again, if I had not gone to the surgery who knows what would have happened. You also might really need antibiotics for for a chest infection. If everybody was so conerned about infecting others and not go to the surgery some could die from secondary complications. I suppose those people currently in intensive care in hospitals with swine flu should not have gone to their surgery:rolleyes:.

I just dont get why he has got it back again. He got rid of it before christmas, which I am grateful for of course. But why has the same thing seemed to have returned?
I just want the summer to get here lol these viruses seem to be getting worse every year.

I had the proper flu once.

I couldn't do anything other than lie down, drift in and out of sleep and wish the pain throughout my body would just go away for days. I was sure it was something much more serious than a common or garden flu, but that's what it was.

I really hope I never get anything like it ever again.

I've also had a few "man-flus" (otherwise known as heavy colds), where I could watch TV and go on my computer.

There is probably more than one strain going round and whilst he's been fighting the other, he's caught another? At a total guess...

Probably right, it has exactly the same symptoms, but possibly a different strain. Will soon find out if me & my daughter get it, as we didn't the other week when he was ill. I assumed we had had that one before.

Yes, and whilst he's fighting it off it weakens his immune system so makes him more likely to get other things.

Or it's one of these annoying strains which comes back just when you think you're over it and you try and do normal things again.

Once the immune system gets rid of an infection like a cold, it can then recognise that infection if it comes back and kill it off straight away. If a different infection comes along that has the same symptoms, the getting rid of it process happens all over again.

A I'm entitled to my opinion, it is a discussion forum.

B Didn't make any comment on your situation so not sure what you are on about stating that loads of hospitals and doctors are wrong

C The current medical advice as far as I am aware is not to attend surgery if you supect you may have flu/swine flu. It's just common sense. Of course each individual has to weight their own situation up and it may become obvious they require hospital care.

All the smilies come across as a tad defensive.

    A) it might be a discussion forum but you told someone that was diagnosed with the flu from a proper doctor that both they and the doctor were wrong. That is more than just an opinion and verges on someone making out that they know more than medical professionals. You also told her she should not have gone to the surgery. She had a bacterial infection, they require antibiotics, I am defensive but in my opinion people on forums giving out 'medical advice' are dangerous. Imagine if someone else has a bacterial infection or pneumonia and read your post about not going to the surgery. If you have an opinion that's fine but to just say someone 's doctoris wrong and giving out advice about when to go to a surgery is ridiculous.

The normal thing to do is stay at home BUT if you feel unwell go to the surgery (I phone and speak to my Doctor first). Many people d end up needing antibiotics and my Doctor wants me to come in with any viral infection as my immune system is messed up.

No disrespect to any doctors, but unless they do blood tests, they wont know from symptoms alone that someone has the flu, or swine flu. It would be handy if they did though.

My Doctor's surgery does still do that test when someone in the high risk group has severe flu. I suppose it would be too expensive to do it for everyone. They are more likely to be able to give correct anti virals as a result.I was tested but luckily only had 'normal' flu. Apparently swine flu has less severe symptoms than flu flu and and often even look like a bad cold but with some people it suddenly takes a turn n and gets far worse and potentially lethal in a few hours.

No it's actual flu with fever, shivers, fatigue..but can't sleep coz my head hurts too much. And to think NYE is just around the corner:(

Sorry you do not have flu. If you had flu you would not even feel like doing anything on laptop.

Majority of people who say they have flu do not, especailly the people who turn up at work and just say "oh i dont feel too good, I have the flu", utter rubbish.

Doctors have a good poster which says "IF you are reading this poster you do not have the flu" Certainly I do not doubt people feel terrible and run down, there are plenty of bugs and viruses which can knock a person for 6 and give some flu like symptoms.

However anyone who has had the miss fortune to have proper flu , such as myself will tell you that the initial illness lasts up to 2 weeks, where you feel so bad that you do not want to move, even to go to toilet, emptying your bowels and bladder where you lay feels like the best option, as trying to even get out of bed feels like you will die. Breathing is just an effort and battle, can see why weak and elderly die from flu.

After about 2 weeks you can just about get up and move, but still feels like the mother of all hang overs and being beaten with baseball bat.

So sorry, people who come on internet, turn up at work, out on street etc who say they have flu, do not have it.

I've only had "proper" flu once when I was 8, was off school for about 3 weeks, all I remember is screaming so bad my mum had to get the doctor round and give me something to calm me down, also remember having some midget gems about a week in....

Now, I don't know if I have full blown flu at the moment, but it feels pretty close, been dying for a wee for over an hour, but just cant be hooped moving, :(

I have had enough of people giving medical diagnoses on this forum. You are a ds forum member and not her doctor. You can say you don't think she has flu but to say she doesn't is negligent as you are then giving a medical diagnoses on a forum site. I have reported you as I am tired of non medical professionals diagnosing people on line it is dangerous and negligent. I never reporrted the [previous threads on the 'flu'thing but no wonder a few were removed.

I have a bad cold. Slept for 3 days solid almost. Not eaten for 3 days.

Today is day 4 and I do feel a little better.

    Flu no. Cold yes.

I think you'll find you have the flu. A cold would never leave you bed ridden and without and appetite like that for four days unless you had an incredibly weak immune system.

Its the old £10 note trick. If you see a £10 note on the floor and pick it up, you have a cold. If you leave it there you have the flu.

That's probably the flu. The difference between a cold and flu is the flu sucks all the will power out of you.
