Surely the picture quality should be enough to tell whether it's HD or not.

I'm an "old folk" who doesn't like being patronised. I can easily see the difference between HD and SD and I know what button I pressed on my remote so do all my "old folk" friends.

I read on another thread it's because ITV now downscale HD for the SD feed. Wouldn't it just be easier if they didn't have a bleeding DOG in the first place.

    No I asked ITV
    they said its HD.

But they did not sort out the confusion
of having "itv" and the same on the HD ch.

    ON ITV2 they have hd
to help viewers know when its a HD.

Soon we will all be on HD4K
and any that do not think HD is worth having
are crazy as it helps your eyes.
Watching in SD is a strain.

So what you are saying is that the difference between HD and SD is palpably obvious, at least to anyone who cares about which version they watch?

Yet you need a DOG to inform you that you have the HD channel on

Spot on! Many on these public forums forget that it is todays "old folk" who invented the very technology they're being labelled as unable to use!

Fox, and FX before that, have done this for years.
Now what bugs me is that Disney Channels, Cartoon Network and Nick Jnr have moved their DOGs to the top of the screen

Yes, the post stated that ITV are downscaling their HD feed to create the SD feed. That still means that ITV HD is in HD. It just means that the SD channel will show exactly what's shown on the HD channel, including the graphics.

    Yes ITVHD shows HD 1080i

    ITV shows SD 480i

But both say "itv" nothing else
and "Some" old folks will not know when looking at their Big TV Screens
as it used to have itvhd
But they removed " hd "
    Even though ITV2hd, ITV3hd & ITV4hd still inform us
    we are watching HD

This thread needs shutting down. I've ready plenty of nonsense before, but this is the absolute pits.

I'll engage you for one post (very much against my better judgment but particularly because I'd like to know your thought processes) but if "some old folks" can't tell the difference between a HD and an SD picture on their big screen then what does it matter? Especially as there is no difference in programming.

Indeed, surely anyone in any doubt as to what channel they are on can hit the SELECT (or equivalent) button on their remote and find out? Dear lord....

    ITV shows 480i. Really!

I wonder how we "old folk" have been managing with BBC 1&2 HD. Perhaps these silly patronising posts will end when you have to go back to school.

Absolutely no one of my generation surfs through the channels until they see an HD logo. That's something only bored teenagers do. Unlike you we have been to Specsavers and don't need an HD logo.

Another oddity is that ITV2 via the Sky Go Android app is showing the ITV2 HD dog, rather than just the standard ITV2 one.

Yes it would, but they are arrogantly (just like many others) not going to do that.

As for the downscaling excuse, that's also nonsense as the DOG is the very last thing added to the feed and so they could downscale the HD to SD and then add different DOGs to each if they wanted.

So now not only are you condescending, you're claims of fact are also so wrong its comical!
    480i?!?!!!!!
No pal, do your research first!
We in the UK broadcast SD at 576i and for the last time already -
'Old folks' do not need a HD tag on the end of a channel logo to tell the difference, ever, at all!!!

Oh dear. How DO us old folks manage, I mean, BBC One HD doesn't have any DOG at all at the moment, neither does BBC One, ITV or ITV HD (at the moment).

Heeeelpppp how can I work out which channel I am on I feel so helpless! :o

But wait... they have different channel numbers and information banners don't they, just like the old days?

Phew, my bacon is saved, my poor old brain doesn't hurt any more! :D
