Beeping smoke alarm

The smoke alarm I've had in for about a year has been beeping every minute or so since yesterday.
The alarm says "Warning battery not replaceable". I've tried the reset but it doesn't seem to stop it.
The only different thing is I had new windows fitted yesterday, could any dust that got into the alarm be affecting it?

The battery needs changing. How on earth is it not replaceable?

Could be one of those with a wired in battery designed to run for 10 years - which hasn't

EDIT: Here is a link to an article which mentions '10 year battery life' alarms. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1260395/Thousands-smoke-alarms-replaced-crews-deluge-complaints-incessant-beeping.html

Are you sure it does not say warning battery not rechargable?

I hope you don't mind me asking

Well either way it needs changing. The recommendation is a yearly change for those that can be. If it's a wired in onethen you need a refund if it's meant to last for ten years. Then replace the alarm.

Or it is one that is wired into the mains with the battery only as a standby back-up. Perhaps the mains supply to it has failed? And it has now run down the battery.

That would make sense. It's not always that clear on items and can be hard to read sometimes OP.

I've taken it off and there's definitely no battery but it states on the back:
Chirping sound every 40 seconds indicates low battery - see instruction manual.

    Guess what?

If you have a model number on the label, you might be able to find a manual on line somewhere if you put it into Google.

... but it's not connected to the mains.

The manual will probably say to replace the unit.

Best thing for the OP to do is take it back - the battery has not lasted 10 years.

    There is a battery - it's built-in, non-replaceable.

I meant there isn't a visible, Duracell type battery. There obviously is one in it but you can't see it or get to it.

It was installed by a fireman.

I've cleaned it out hoovered the vents, reset it. So far, so good.

    See how it goes.

it could have got dust on the sensor from having the windows replaced, maybe try blowing it out or gentle hoovering.

How do you know it isn't wired to the mains? if you cannot see any battery

Perhaps it's stopped beeping because the battery is completely flat. If you 'test' it does it still alarm?

I suggest that you contact the Fire Brigade on its general number and see what it can do to help - from the article I linked to earlier, the manufacturer of those faulty ones is funding replacements.

I agree with this, they will know exactly what to do if they fitted it.

As far as I know, the fire brigade wire it to the mains and put in a back up battery.

I believe you to be mistaken in that view, but pleased to be proven wrong.
